Go Pro or alternative

I know this subject may have been covered in the past but may not pick up on new models.

I would like to get a camera for cycling and the well known Go Pro Hero 3 black is an option but at a premium. I don't want to buy cheap and miss out on quality but don't know what other options and deals are available.

If I go for the Go Pro I noticed there is various options and packs, so again which would be the best?

What should I go for and are there any sale deals?

For me the motorsport bundle was the best value for money for mounts etc as these are expensive afterwards.

I also have a K edge under seat mount and a home made under stem bracket that has a K edge mount bolted to it sorry no pictures and it is on my summer bike that is in the garage false roof but mouts under the stem a little like the out front garmin mount.

The gp pro also does upside down filming needed for the under seat mounted filming.

you may want to look at battery life I went for the extra piggy back mount battery for longer film making i.e. filming the assent of the Alpine climbs.

Also the cold reduces the battery life.

The go pro is water proof as I and plenty of others take them white water kayaking. So a bit of rain is fine but the rain drops are a pain on the lens when you watch the play back.

I am no IT wizard but you should look at how you are going to edit it as it could cost you more in soft ware than the camera.

I had a demo of the Go Pro and I was sold on its low light capabilities above all else. At night, in nothing more than street lighting, the picture seemed as useful as if I was actually there in person.

What do you mean "for cycling"? Is it for commuting or for mountain biking?

It appears to be the professionals' choice for small, rugged applications. Check out their website or YouTube to see what's possible in terms of quality footage. I'd spend the extra money for the top of the range 3+ Black model, which can be had for around £300. I may well be doing this in the next few months, depending on whether the 4 is likely to be released soon or not.

Yes, you will see lots of GoPros dotted about on TV productions, but specialists will use toshiba and Hitachi mini cameras in custm housings with full remote panels. The BBC had an entire department dedicated. Being the beeb, they sold it off...

The Garmin mini camera is worth a look. Built in gps and a slightly better shape for use on a helmet.

I've had a hero 2 for a while and I'm happy with it. The only thing I can offer is buy from a good dealer and keep the receipt. My mates hero3 didn't work from day one and when did a bit if googling you realise this is a brilliant piece of kit when working but has a massive list if possible problems. GoPro cust service were ok in Tue end but took nearly a Mont after receiving his knackered one before they replaced it. Chest rig is great, helmet mounts are great and I bought the msport edition as it does have the same mounts as all the otheres but it comes with a suction mount which is normally £35ish
