Thinking of making my first visit to Le Mans in 2014 - am I way too late to book a caravan site pitch somewhere nearby?........ I don't want to be in a tent.

Failing that any good hotel recommendations that won't already be booked, or am I stupidly late?

You'll still be able to get some of the on-site campsites direct from the ACO or through agencies, other tickets will come up on here and club arnage between now and then. Or if you want to be off-site you should be ok at http://www.bountylemans.com/, or there are various municipal campsites in the area, have a look at the guide at clubarnage.com

There's a French travellers camp in the woods south of Beasuejour, you should fit right in with a caravan biggrin

I've camped at Beausejour a few times, basically the campsite is a very large field, so if its chucking it down with rain it can be rather interesting! If its really dry, it becomes a dust cloud. To get to the site I would advise you to go Via Arnage. the other way in is the road between the Airfield and the Grandstands which runs past Parking Blue Pistonheads camping and Maison Blanc, It depends when you plan to arrive but that road gets busy and is also used as a place to watch people perform burnouts to the maddening crowd!

Two words.....GOOD LUCK

We've done BJ the past two years. Will be doing it with caravan this year.

People talk about the terror of arriving, but I've never really had any problems with the crowd looking for burnouts. I'd expect even less with a Caravan on the back. Just keep your windows shut.

It can get very muddy. Certainly has done each of the last two years. We saw numerous people get stuck. I'm towing with a 4wd, but it's a soft roader, so slightly uncertain how I'll cope. I'll have a tow rope so that I can detach myself if needed, and also they are tractors around to pull anyone who gets seriously stuck (we saw a Q7 sat on it's sills).

Can be a bit of a walk, but you get used to that. Goes slightly mental on Sunday night, so be prepared!

This was after a couple of days of drying out....

If the forecast is bad choose your pitch carefully especially if you want to get the car out during your stay there. Lasst year the first area on the right was a total mudbath, as was the second area on the right (on the opposite site of the track to one of the encampments.

The field beyond this point (beyond the 2nd toilet block) was a lot better, still wet areas but not as much of a mudbath.

My automatic mondeo was the only car moving out of our lot.... the 320D got stuck. The M5 owner did not fancy it after seeing that. I was actually quite impressed at how well it coped.

We were camped on the left hand field before the campervan field that was adjacent Porsche Curves. Saw some amusing sights. Some people just camped where they got stuck. Another minibus was stuck, and free'd by two of our campmates who ended up covered. They jokingly said afterwards bet that's full of people. It was... They just sodded off without a thankyou - English too.

Strange that. I managed to run the battery flat on my car shortly after arriving. Guys next to us refused to help jump start it, and I eventually found someone to jump start it. However didn't stop the guys next to us asking to borrow my jump leads when they ran the battery flat on their car!

If you can get a ticket for the camp site called Garage Verte it will suite you well, quite flat, well drained and electric hook up. We get ours through just-tickets as it seems hard to book this one direct. We were in BJ last year and it was WET and a long walk to the village
