I'm trying to find out if there are any limitations on where the registration is 'split' on a motorcycle plate. The government leaflet INF104 just says "The number plate must be a “2-line” number plate". So if you had a registration such as AB12XYZ could it be presented as, for example,

AB12X
YZ

I can't find anything that says the registration has to be split over 2 lines after the 2 numbers only, or that the 3 letters must be kept together on the same line.

I thought the letters and numbers were divided into group a and group b. So on a standard car the gap between the 2 is defined and should not be moved to another point. Surely it follows that two line plates either car or bike would have to be split at the same point?

Legal would be

AB12
XYZ

One line or different splits won't be legal but will you get pulled? Probably not. Few bikers care about small plates or loud exhausts and rarely get pulled for them. Personally I prefer standard as no reason to attract further attention IMO.

If it's any help I had a 12x6 plate on a vehicle, legal on the vehicle it was displayed on & with correct font etc, 2 lines with the split in the wrong place, I got a warning from a friendly plod.

Regulation 13 of the The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 along with parts 1 & 2 of Schedule 3 of the same regs define the permitted layout of registration marks on various vehicles. What you are suggesting is not allowed.

Just out of interest, what if you had a very short (2/3 digit) plate?

Would it have to be:

A
1

Rather than:

A1

So if I have my plate "NN LL" (where NN are the numbers and LL are the letters) can I display it on one line providing the spacing and letter size is according to those required?

On a bike? No. See Section 13(2) - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/561/regula...
Then look at the diagrams in Schedule 3 - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/561/schedu...
