What vehicle is this? Lucky escape for the occupants but not a good advert for the brand.

I think that's the reason that signs are now being designed like this:

Im under the impression they are meant to fold with the impact, rather than force the car to snap.

Yep, one of these - http://carlook.net/db/mitsubishi/lancer_ralliart/1... types, but not full blown Ralliart. Just used for the photos.

Looking at the photos I know a road a bit like that but with a wider verge on the NS. About half way across is it is a normal post, not a curly wurly one, with the speed camera sign atop it. I've thought about the risk that sign represents to people that may find themselves for whatever the reason crossing that verge towards that post versus the deterrent to drivers that pass it see it and then slowing down for a few miles.

Is it just me or do the images not look right for the story, look at the ends of the structure, they're clean straight cuts, so either cut by the emergency services, cut'n'shut or the story is wrong - little to no chance that hitting any static object bar a magical katana is going to leave those edges as are?

The usual standard of rag reporting "The vehicle had left the road and collided with a motorway sign"

Why - did someone forget to apply the handbrake ?

The sign involved was this one. I notice it is protected by a barrier but this is rather short and low.

Except on Mythbusters they were trying to cut the car lengthways, through it's strongest point - the engine. Even when they took the engine out they still didn't get a full lengthways bisection, though I'd imagine a car is a lot easier to bisect from the side, but it must still take some doing.

So how fast were they going to get through the barrier and do that to a car?

lol, never let the facts stand in the way of a good story hehe

Point taken, but it still must have been travelling some to do that amount of damage!
