Nintendo Network off line for days, now down for 12 hours!

Since getting the new Nintendo Wiu for Tom and Lucy this Christmas we have been dogged by messages saying we need to update the system, and register a new Nintendo network ID.
We tried for days, but gave up as we got constant errors, which means some of the games can't even be played.
It seems it due to an error with the Nintendo network, possibly due to too may people with new 3ds and wi consoles all trying to register at once.
So they have decided to take the network and shop off line for 12 hours, as of 9pm GMT last night.
So we tried again this morning and again it keeps failing!
Can this really be acceptable for a company the size of Nintendo to have their global systems offline for days?
This seems to be going along the lines of the network debacle that blackberry experienced, and we know what happend to that company.
I do hope that this is not the beginning of the end for Nintendo!
I will. Report back later on the actual Wiu, it does seems to have a few strange quirks too!

Connected ours up on Friday morning with no problems even did the data transfer from old Wii to Wii U. Guess I was just lucky...
Glad you managed it, we have been trying for days to do the system update, which keeps saying it's needed.Some of the new games we have won't allow us to play them without the update.
It managed to do the update finally this morning at 10am local time.
However we still can't assign a Nintendo network account to Toms Mii character, that is also limiting our use in some games.
Let's hope they fix it soon, Toms fed up already, and I am becoming frustrated with waiting too
