The rear wiper motor went bang on my mkV. Was covered under trader warranty though.

Is the bonnet shut, wipers are isolated if bonnet is open

THIS

Open and close your bonnet, makes sure it's fully shut and the display by the clocks doesn't say it's open.

Mine did this but it was accompanied with the dashboard saying the bonnet was open when it was shut. £20 bonnet catch sensor fixed it. Wipers worked on other settings though I recall.

Polish the windscreen - I've had wiper 'failure' twice - both times it was due to an invisible layer of ste on the glass.

What a rip off a front wiper motor cost me less than 50 quid , then it's just a case of wiper arm removal, bit of plastic leaf catching trim off, remove the linkeage with the motor attached and replace. How on earth did anyone charge more than an hours labour for that?????
