Running on low oil
Discussion
Running it with 2.7 litres when it's meant to be 4.2 is far from ideal
If it's not knocking or tapping you may have had a lucky escape. Where abouts was the level on the dipstick?
Just out of curiosity, what engine is it? I'm pretty paranoid about oil levels on my Accord Type-R as they're known to use oil, which mine seems to do at quite an inconsistent rate.

I wouldn't worry about it. I service cars where the amount of oil the comes out could be measured in a cup!!
I never actually measure what comes out, but I can give a good guess on what I can see. A prime example, Vauxhall vivaro 2.0 diesel, about 1.5l came out, capacity inc filter, 7.7l. Engine was running fine (at the minute). (I only know the figures as it was done yesterday)

My R56 Cooper S was burning oil at a rate of 1 litre every 600 miles or so. I was told this was normal
, but didn't believe it. Was checking it every other day in the end, and you're right, the dipstick is damned near impossible to read.
Another reason not to buy a MINI Cooper S...

It was only light hearted.
I've got a 20 year old Discovery, don't listen to me!
So have I and tbh the only place oil doesn't leak from is the engine and it never burnt any either.I've got a 20 year old Discovery, don't listen to me!
How do people manage to let their engine oil level get so low? What happened to regular checks?
I suppose too many people nowadays think that their car will operate properly and safely on the same maintenance regime as their fridge.

So have I. Oil leaks are normal, it's only marking its territory and when the drips stop you know it's time to top up the gearbox.

I stopped buying a magazine recently when someone had a young son who hadn't bothered checking the oil level on his Mini. How do people manage to let their engine oil level get so low? What happened to regular checks?

Engine locked - f
ked engine. If one of the mag staff can't teach his son to check the oil level on his car, his opinion is worthless to me.

That is considered normal!?

I'm assuming pretty 'thin' oil?

BMW state 1 ltr of oil per 1000 miles is perfectly acceptable, when i purchased mine the other week it needed topping up straight away and I will keep a closer eye on the level compared to other cars that I've run because its a know feature of the n14 lump.
May be perfectly acceptable to BMW, but it's getting expensive over the course of the average mileage year. Especially if you go to BMW for the top up containers which are, probably, circa £20 a pop!

And the extended service interval times now being used ...could be an expensive added running cost.Especially if you go to BMW for the top up containers which are, probably, circa £20 a pop!
