Ok so bare with me but what, in your view, is the best car out there when you consider the following?

£5k budget
Age, condition, mileage
Quality, fit and finish.
Prestige, brand appeal
Performance
Practicality
Reliability.
So what ticks the most boxes?
This isn't really a "what car" thread (there is no right or wrong answer or specific requirements) more of an exercise in classifieds scanning and seeing what you value more in a car and why.

Golf or Passat sadly. I'd probably buy a P38 Range Rover.

This one is a bit over the budget but I think you'd find a good one for £5k

By those criteria, I think I'd agree with the Golf GTi. Maybe the estate version of one of the compact execs if you're willing to sacrifice age for a marginally better badge.

As per the OP it's quite an open ended search for what gives the most for the budget. Everyone is different and has different requirements for seating/load carrying. my question is about what attributes you value most of all.

I'd be interested to here why people like the Golf GTI, I myself have an A3 2.0TFSi with Quattro - very similar to the golf, but with 4WD. I like it as it has a good range of abilities; reasonably quick, good (reassuring traction) quality feel to the interior. Been very reliable and worn well over the past 100k miles, big enough and spacious enough for my particular needs. Downsides: a little thirsty, a bit plain to look at and not particularly exciting to drive when compared to a BMW (or similar).
That was my choice 5 years ago when I bought it, and there isn't much out there that I would consider to replace it (for my budget). Hence this thread.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but seems a bit short sighted to speak that way of the MK5 GTI. The Golf GTI was always seen as the great all rounder, and the MK5 was well regarded as a return to form for Volkswagen. It might not light your fire, but it's quick enough for most people, comfortable, well put together, delivers reasonable economy, etc etc - in the budget, and given the brief, the MK5 GTI ticks all the boxes.

I think because everyone's requirements are different usually relating to their circumstances.

My daily is an E61 530d touring which fits my bill as a big comfy cruiser I can get 4 people plus work gear in if needed and not too stupid on fuel doing 20k miles a year. .. would I have have bought this car if I only did 5k miles a year and didn't need the space ? Hell no !!!!.

It's not all things to all men though. It may be a reasonable hatch back, but that doesn't suit everyone really, does it.

Exactly, no good to me. Not big enough for my needs, prefer RWD and feels too small inside personally...
