I'm rather liking these so went to see one and had a DCi in mind.

Had decided on a DCi mid range spec.

Salesman says not available until next June at the earliest.

So I started to talk about different trim spec and same thing...

Over 6 month wait.

Is that usual for any new car?

Loads of 13 and 63 plates on AT. I wouldn't wait six months for one.

I had to go top of range in order to get one in 2 weeks. Most are built to that spec. It's not a lot more money, for quite a lot more car.

Autocar reviewed the MG3 and gave it a decent write up, ride and handling getting 4.5/5, available at the same money and they said they preferred the MG, despite a engine that needs to be thrashed, but they did concede that the Dacia didnt have as much power and also needs thrashing but isnt as quick.

MG is a supermini whereas the Duster is a 4x4, no comparison

They had several in the showroom and weren't allowed to sell them apparently.

The sales guy said they had one as a demonstrator and the other a courtesy car.

I counted 5.

He kept telling me how basic they are (I know that & that's part of the appeal) and also kept trying to sell me a Renault Scenic instead.

Apparently, demand is low for the Duster in the UK but he had earlier said that during 2013 (so far) that 21,000 had been sold here.

Quite a strange experience.

I went straight into the Nissan garage next door and had a very different and positive experience. I hadn't been considering a Nissan but I'm now looking at Quashqai's too.

perhaps he has sold his quota of dusters and needs to shift some renaults. I bet the dacias are hurting renault sales and while they are being sold from the same showrooms, they would rather see you something now rather than let you walk out faced with a 6 month wait - which is ridiculous for a white good

Well since one rolls off the production line in Sunderland every minute, I think they probably have enough to get you one instantly as opposed to importing them from Romania.

I was thinking Sandero, that's their supermini, the Duster can be had with 2wd, depend whether someone just needs a cheap new car or a cheap 4wd.

Aren't Dusters mostly 2wd at the moment? wobble

I am sure you already realise that the Duster, Scenic and Qashqai are all derived from the same chassis and running gear/engines. They are basically variations on the same thing. Nothing wrong with that BTW, just information.

The Duster is based on the same platform as the Sandero and Logan. This is the Nissan B platform so is shared with the Micra, Clio, etc. It has no relation to the Scenic/QQ platform.

Nissan probably only build a car when they have an buyer for it, so it is likely there is a lead time of a few weeks prior to actually getting one. They won't just churn them out hoping they can sell them.

A friend of mine who lives on a farm got one of these a few weeks back. He got a completely standard petrol 4x4 model, he's not interested in cars at all and just wanted a cheap new car suitable for light off-road use. It's very basic and crude for my liking but he seems very happy.

Depreciation is going to be the biggest enemy to the Dacia!...they will sell well in many countries that have a large need for cheap vehicles and where brand competition is not so fervent......over here they may well sell well in this so called economic downturn we're in but given time may go the same way as Daewoo!.....We shall see, personally i don't give a toss, there is to much metal on the forecourt's as it is, we don't need any more !!
