My mate owns a 30k Porsche 993 ,we were discussing insurance , I was shocked when he told me his premium is £175 a year on a classic policy with 5k miles a year .

Why would a 30k Porsche 993 be cheaper than a TVR ? Both the same age and the owner is about the same age .confused

What Daz? You mean you are paying over £100 for your Chim insurance. Surely nobody pays over £100.00?

My mate with a 911 pays considerably less then me and we are similar risks.

I also remember when I was looking for a TVR that a wedge was less than half the cost to insure than a Chim.

Why ? I thought it was a bit expensive when I went from a MG costing me £80 a year to the TVR over £300.

I was surprised this year at the cost of insuring my recently acquired Chimaera as a 'normal' car. £278 full comp with 9 yrs NCB with Direct line. It was only £30 more than a 2.0 Vauxhall Omega that I had been knocking about in.

In response to the OP, the Porsche most likely has LSD, airbag (s) and ABS. All things that reduce injury or the likelihood of such. Nowadays, it's often not the value of the car, but the 3rd party liability costs and how many people the car is likely to kill or maim seriously in the event of an accident.

When I first got my Chimaera, insurance was about £350 on a milage limited classic policy. The problem came when I reached the 5k mileage limit in nine months. I wasn't going to give up driving the car for the remaining three months so had to cancel the classic policy and put in on a normal one. This increased the cost to £650 as I have no second no claims discount. It came down £100 this year but it is worth it to me.

I still think it is reasonable value. My Merc costs me £500 to insure.

I'm about £100 more than you with Direct Line but unlimited mileage and protected no claims...

cry

I'm well over a grand, don't want to depress myself by looking up the actual number. Lot's of naughty boy points and use it as a main car though, my own fault.

Is his car standard or as modified as yours? Either that or your insurers follow you on pistonheads

Trevor450, the alternative would have been to have taken out another classic policy and accept that you have 9 month policy, not an annual one.

Or

Mine ran out of miles in February 2013, after 5000 miles. Buggered if I was going to stop having fun, after all, I am married, so I changed companies and took an unlimited miles classic policy, with full track day cover, from Classcline, for just over £400. I did have to negotiate, but they are negotiatable.

Aye, that was a consideration. Classicline wouldn't give me a policy anywhere near the price Mannings quoted me. They also wouldn't give me commuting or business use on a classic policy which Mannings did. I don't know where they get the variations in pricing for similar risks sometimes.

I was originally with Mannings. They wouldn't give me more than 5000 miles. It's each to his own parameters. I don't use mine for commuting or business, as I have a separate business car. I have done 11,000 miles since February.

I guess I am saying shop around, and negotiate......they want your business.

A friend has a DB9 and he pays less than £300. He is a lot older than me though with no claims but still a good price.

I insured my Chim through A. Flux for £335 (car value £10k and 6k miles per year limit. A few mods and parked in the drive in south london. 11 year NCB). Moved the chim on just before Christmas and insured a Porsche Gayman under same circs but paid £100 more. It must surely be car value that hit the premium. I had the chim for more than twice as long as any car I had ever owned (since 1978) and it was truly an honour to have owned her. I hope to return to the fold at some point; maybe when I can afford the Saggy! I shall maintain a healthy, non-stalking like, interest in the marque and keep membership of the club going (so I can join the lovely chaps at the SELNWK region on their regular hoons!

Adieu.

I've always paid more to insure my Volvo C70 cabriolets (both have been T5s) than to insure the TVR.
I don't 'do' limited mileage, so no idea how much difference that would make.
Neither of the Volvos have ever been worth as much as the TVR was at time of insuring.

I've never had a reasonable quote from the Flux incapacitator. They wanted £2k to insure a remapped 535d a few years ago. Got the same cover for £600 elsewhere. The term 'drug induced dreamworld' springs to mind. rolleyes
