Sideways takeoff at Sunburgh..
Discussion
Crosswind landings are far worse than take offs (IMHO)
On landings, it is really strange to look at the runway approaching in your side window
rather than out off the front windscreen, then you have to turn the aircraft
at the very last second before you hit the ground.
(if you don't turn properly, then the undercarriage can collapse!!!!!)
For the take off you hold the aircraft on the ground until you are at a speed that you are sure it will take off
then ease off the pressure on the control slightly and it will take off (almost on it's own) and "flicks" into the wind
Usually the crosswind actually gives you more lift, but the flick can be startling!!!

You don't have to do it that way of course. You could fly wing-down instead and keep the runway dead ahead.rather than out off the front windscreen, then you have to turn the aircraft

Agreed - it is just which one you are taught/prefer
For low mass, I prefer wing down. At least this way you know if the cross-wind is beyond the capabilities of your aircraft before you're being blown sideways off the runway after kicking it straight when crabbing in. Doesn't matter so much in heavy aircraft.Gassing Station | Boats, Planes & Trains | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
