My last few cars have been 2 BMW 635CSi's, Jaguar XJ-S V12 and currently a P38 Range Rover V8.

Have had unwarrented comments made to me on numerous occasions over the years along the lines of:

"bet you don't drive past many petrol stations in that..."

My stock answers are 'I work for BP (or any oil firm) and all our petrol is free...' or 'actually I do, £135 takes me about 200 miles!'

"Have you never heard of global warming?"

'Yes but I don't belive in it...'

What are your best comebacks or am I being childish in even rising to it.

when I said I ran two cars and somebody said something similar, I just said I can only drive one at a time. Which is true.......don't know if that classes as a comeback

My mum worked for BP as an oil broker and had a rather generous share option so I normally tell them I'm just building up the share price.

filled up the V6 Omega tonight and got the same comment, 'yes' I said, 'only about 25 to 27 mpg on petrol but the lpg is far greener than that stinker diesel you're driving and costs 73.9p per litre'

He wasn't particularly pleased with that

"Just think of global warming!" - Just doing my bit, was a little cold last winter wasn't it, that and we haven't had a warm summer in years!

"Hate to see your fuel bill" - below average as I only use the car at weekends or just helping the government out in its time of need or cars are my thing, I don't smoke or drink excessively, got to have some fun!

Only ever asked that sort of question once. He was very quiet when I asked him how much his new turbo + injectors + oil pump on his super economical diesel audi cost...

"Actually, it usually does about 30mpg smile " - last time someone made an uninformed assumption about the Elise.

The difference in fuel costs is less than they are normally paying per month to drive a modern, ugly & boring pile of poo. Means I just smile & say it's better than driving one of them.

My 3 litre Legacy ran at about 19-22mpg. I used to tell anyone who expressed surprise at my choice of car that I was helping the UK to have decent summers.

If they were genuinely interested, I was always happy to explain why I thought it was worth the economy "pain".

I enjoy driving - I'd gladly pay the extra than drive around in a boring diesel box.

I don't think trading luxury and performance for economy is clever though. "I poke myself in the eye because it's cheaper than going on holiday"

Do they go far enough between breakdowns for fuel consumption to be much of an issue?

Did 20k in my 635 and never had to do anything to it. Had a couple of services done. One at Munich Legends, one at BMW and also changed the oil myself once.
