Normally they have several back ups, and indications in the flight deck of a failure. SOP are in place for inconsistent reading and fluctuations in pitot static pressure. AF447 was handles incorrectly and the crew did not fully understand exactly what was going on. All A320 probes have been changed due to the elements burning out.Somehow I really would like to know if my pitot heaters had stopped working...
