Currently looking for a TV/monitor for gaming, which will 90% be for sim racing.

At the moment I only have a PS3, but in the next month or so, the intention is to build/buy a gaming PC, but I'd like something that will work with both. Using a TV for PS3 and then a monitor for PC would be possible, but I'd rather just have the 1 and I imagine, once everything is set up, it'll be the PC that gets used the most.

Is it better to use a monitor like - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prod...

I'm leaning towards something like that, as I imagine it will be better quality for the PC gaming, but will it run the PS3 fine until I get the PC?

It has HDMI, so I'm guessing will work fine with the PS3?

Or a new LED TV that gets good reviews for gaming? Using an Oldish Sony LCD at the moment and in GT6, there is noticeable motion blur (I think that's what it is) when going really fast on tracks with lots of scenery, or when all the cars are bunched up together. It's especially noticeable in the Red Bull Junior Cup. Maybe not motion blur, but another problem, but definitely annoying, everything seems to just stutter a little bit.

I've been researching for hours, and it's all getting a bit confusing, so I've kind of given up and decided recommendations would be the best way to go. I'm guessing lots of people have a similar set up, so any help/tips would be great.

27"-32" should be plenty, as I'll only be a few feet from the screen.

Budget of upto, say, £400, but less would be better, as it'll go towards the PC.

Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

A PC monitor will, in 95% of cases, be better for gaming, regardless of platform i.e. PC / Xbox / PS3 etc. The input lag is generally lower than a comparative TV of similar spec. The Iiyama you linked to is a very good choice. Other cheaper options come from AOC (available in PC world), but the instructions and controls are in some form of ancient latin... rofl

If you do go with that Iiyama, let us know what it's like as I'm about to upgrade to a monitor to replace my ancient (but quite good for gaming) Panny LCD TV. smile

I have one of these for the PS3 and TV

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prod...

Its a damn good bit of kit colours looks so much better than the TV and it has such a fast response time there is hardly any ghosting. Running stuff at 144hz on the PC is rather nice too.

Thanks for the replies.

I think it might be between those 2. Iiyama for the price and decent reviews, but the Asus reviews a bit better. I think the difference in quality will be negligible for what I need. The Asus seems to just edge it with the reviews, though.

Will keep an eye on prices in the new year. I expect there might be some now models coming out next year, so there might be something new to choose from soon. I really want something that will last a few years and won't be outdated in 6 months! If that's possible?

Sounds like a sensible plan to me; I'll probably follow you in a few weeks smile
I wouldn't worry about it being outdated in 6 months time. Progress has slowed a small amount in the monitor field; 4K is the next step, but it's still far from affordable (see the 'pro' 4K monitors on overclockers site, errmmm...how much? and they're of little benefit to console gaming as even the PS4 is only 1080/60 still. 144hz will be enough for any gaming needs for the forseeable I'd have thought.

That sounds good.

Think I'll get the Asus ordered in the next week or so.

Ha, yeah, those prices are insane. Since I've been thinking of getting a PC for sim racing, and looking up parts to build one, everything seems to have gone crazy. I had no idea until about 2 days ago that computers can haver several graphics cards!! I've been away from PC scene for a little while!!

A lot of SIM racers use multi-monitor set ups. Personally I'd hold fire on that sort of system until the full commercial release of the Oculus Rift, 360' VR will blow multi-monitors into the dust. The experience is good already, it just needs the resolution now.

It will make me vomit, I will be puking circles about myself, it will be the best thing in the world and it will make me violently ill.
Running x3 of those ultrawide thingys @ 120hz after realising the Oculus Rift melts my brain might be nice.
Can't do single monitor any more.

Have you tried one? It did make me feel weird in iRacing but I got used to it pretty quickly. The level of immersion was awesome the ability to look through the corners made me faster and it easier to avoid collisions.
Ultimately it was the low res that put me off.
It freaked a lot of people out though and did make people feel sick.

Yeah, a triple screen set up would be something to consider in the future. For now I just want to try it out and see how it goes. I can see things snowballing very quickly and a lot of money being spent on bits.

I'd heard of the Oculus Rift, but didn't really know what it was it. It does look pretty good, just watched some videos on Youtube. Definitely looks like something that needs to be tried first before spending money on.

Not tried one yet, think I will wait for retail.
Most of the things that make people puke should be gone by then.
I get pukey in the air but not land and sea.
They should make a puke bag attachment, i'm in then.

I use my PC plugged into a (couple of years old) LED Samsung TV. It all runs at 1080p and I've never noticed any kind of blur or lag, I reckon you'd be fine with any of the modern LED TV's.

I've used it for just about every genre of gaming both slow and fast motion and I've never noticed anything to make me feel any of my PC monitors would look/feel any better. In fact the colours are much brighter on the TV as I have a PC monitor sat next to it as a second screen.

As mentioned though the Rift (if it doesn't just make you spill your dinner) when it eventually gets a proper release will probably be better than everything else for driving sims smile (I want one a 'little')
