Hi i currently have a MK5 Golf GTI 3dr in manual which is a fantastic all round car and does everything i want it too, BUT i have now taken up clay pigeon shooting and i need a car to get down rough and bumpy tracks and into fields and out again lol.

I dont want a huge off roader i.e land cruiser and on the other end of the scale i dont want a fiat panda 4x4 as ive 2 pointer type dogs. It needs to be a simalar size to the golf and ideally manual and fun to drive. Is this too much of a long shot ?????

So my budget is up to about 20k, dont need rear seats really and is fun to blast around in

Any Ideas ???? please bear in mind in 6'3 and cant really fit into defenders.

Yeti 4x4 sounds perfect in top spec petrol or diesel.

Quite hard that as most of the 4x4 that are fun to drive - in the same way as a Golf GTI are not going to be that good off road eg BMw X3 / X5 Honda CRV etc
Depends on your definition of rough roads I guess. You may get away with one of the soft roaders with a decent set of tyres on. What do the other people that shoot with drive ? Proper 4x4 or a soft roader ?
A porsche Cayenne or the previous model VW Touareg are surprisingly capable off road but probably too big size wise , as I would say a LR Disco or a RR.
Mitsubishi Shogun, 3rd (SWB) manual - LR defender, Old shape Kia Sorento, but none of them I would class as sporting, but can be fun to drive (well not the green oval one in my eyes) .

Octavia 4x4. It is a Golf, more or less, but with more boot space and ground clearance.

Also quite understated for the hunting/shooting/fishing set.

You could get a Forester turbo or Legacy for that comfortably.

Yes probably a soft roader that is 4wd with decent tyres.

3dr shogun sounds the best so far but they must be something out there thats fun to drive

I'd have thought an Octavia Scout would be your best bet. They drive very much like a Golf (unsurprisingly, really), have a respectable amount of power and apparently are pretty respectable for light offroading.

2 sundays ago I went to a cross country race. It has been very wet and the car park was a field and the field was a hill. My car had 4 people in it a 25kg bag of spuds in the boot.

As we approached the field my passenger said we should park on the road. Pah! There was an X5 in front of me, he goes through the gate and then proceeds to go up the hill sideways with all 4 wheels spinning. My passengers reiterated that they thought we should park on the road, so I just drove into the field, up the hill and reverse parked into a space. "oh, you are good, Willy", they coo'd. Better than the X5 driver anyway. The only advantage those soft roaders have over a normal car is ground clearance.

Hardly meets the "a similar size to the Golf" bit of the requirements, though. They're huge!

The Mk 4 Forester is only 30cm longer than the Mk 7 Golf… and much, much better ground clearance. What's 12 inches between friends?

Another vote for the Octavia Scout. They do one with the 1.8 TSI engine which is rather nice.
