I would say the vast majority of new cars and I would hope all of the more expensive stuff would come with Bluetooth kits for phones.

So why do I keep seeing people driving the likes of Range Rovers and Merc M Class 4x4's using their phones?

Are they too lazy to set their phones up? Do they feel safer in their big cars therefore it's ok to make use the phone?

  • People genuinely don't know that the feature is there
  • People are too lazy to pair their phone
  • People are too thick to think its an easy process to do
  • People are stupid.

Ah but that is only good for voice calls.

Twitter, facebook, pH mobile etc all require holding the phone!

The answer is in the last line of your question:

Are they too lazy to set their phones up?

Certainly.

Do they feel safer in their big cars therefore it's ok to make use the phone?

Certainly

A third question would round it off.

Does the law apply to them? No, of course not.

Far too big and important. In their opinion.

Certainly not a defence, but the quality of some of the manufacturer fitted handsfree kits is absolutely abysmal.

I got a Facebook message via my car's Bluetooth the other day, and when it read it out to me through the speakers, I think it took far too much concentrating on so never again. I will read my messages when I've stopped next time. All this tech is not always for the better.

I started on the company car trail back in 88......just how did Vauxhall spunk the lead they had on the market back then so badly....that we are coming to fisticuffs in our race to get our hands on a Hyundai or Kia instead???

OP - 100% in agreement with you, and I've observed the same thing. Merc drivers, I'm ashamed to say, appear to be amongst the worst. Mind you round here the builders chariot of choice is an RRS and they are by far and away the worst.

The bigger the Merc the more prevalent the phone use IME. I think there's a "look how important I am" kind of arrogance involved.

As above, not correct - my new car gives FB and Twitter updates, or it would if I chose to have it switched on.... I don't though, as when I'm driving, I'd rather concentrate on driving, and not bothered what is going on on my social media feeds.

Surprising how poor audio quality is in some Bluetooth equipped cars. More like talking to someone pooing in a tube. Then there are the cars launched a few years ago where the software has never been updated so that they use an older Bluetooth protocol or don't support the latest phones. Then when you switch on Bluetooth and GPS and WiFi it canes your battery of a smartphone that barely lasts a full day.

But most of all. A lot of company car and new car drivers (of all social classes) are the new chavs. They've blown so much on a car, or think by paying company car tax that there is a self-entitlement to do what they want when they want and that the world revolves around THEM.

Few months ago I was sat at a cafe with a mate just watching cars go by and a Ferrari 458 stops at a traffic light. All good as it's a nice car to see, however, the light changes and I can see the driver clearly talking on his iphone (noticed due to the 'please look at me' gold back cover).

Now I'm sure he was driving to be seen, but that doesn't excuse that he was on the phone especially when I would have thought a 458 came with bluetooth as standard. If it doesn't or it wasn't working the loser still shouldn't have been driving whilst on the phone, however nice the car was!!

Hi Superhoop, good decision. But what the f*ck are the car manufacturers thinking? I know, let's make cars that encourage people to be distracted from driving!

Am I the only one thinking it's nuts to have social media streaming into your car whilst you're driving? It's guaranteed 'inattentional blindness' behind the wheel.

I find that unbelievably irresponsible.
Absolutely no need at all.

You think someone so addicted to Facebook or Twitter that they stream it over their car speakers won't then try to respond or reply..?
