Toyota verso 1.8 auto mpg
Discussion
Its got a 1.8 145bhp engine and that's trying to pull 2 tons of car around with an autobox. Common sense says the economy is going to be pretty crap.
He was a fool to buy it based on the manufacturers stated MPG, as that's always done in conditions you won't ever match on the road day to day.
What MPG does he get out of it? I wouldn't expect much more than 30 on a run, and maybe low 20's around town.

sorry dint read your full reply, thats exactly what hes getting
Unless he is doing a gazzilion miles per year then 30mpg average isnt crippling.Tell him to worry about the more important things in life.
You could also remind him that its probably been very reliable, starts first time and things like tyres and servicing are ridiculously cheap?
^This.
I run a 2.0i Toyota Avensis 110 miles a day. People call me foolish for not having a diesel but this way I
1) DON'T Have something on the "never never" that I'm paying £300 a month for
2) DO Have something that has almost unmatched reliability
3) OWN something that I can put branded tyres on at £50 a corner
4) Can service easily myself
All of those savings negate the diesel savings almost entirely - plus no depreciation.

Mrs GB has a '08 2.2 Diesel Verso that goes from 30-55mpg (trip computer) depending on town/motorway but she does 15-20k/year so diesel is worth it.
I would be happy with the mpg of the 1.8 for less miles TBH. Ours is now at 109k and has only every needed routine services and tyres, most reliable car I have ever had.

Indeed. My mk1 Avensis 2.0vvt-i would average 45+mpg for the whole working week (about 280 miles, mostly DC). And as you say, thoughtfully designed to be easy to work on.I run a 2.0i Toyota Avensis 110 miles a day. People call me foolish for not having a diesel but this way I
