It really does my head in!
How long does it normally take to export one photo on your systems? Mine is 19sec per photo. There's : resizing to 2048px long edge, watermark, sharpening for screen and saving as 100% quality without size limit, normally each JPG is around 2.5mb
I'm using late 2012 MBP 13" RD i5 2.5ghz with 8gb of RAM connected to 27" Thunderbolt display. It's not even just the export, everything Lightroom/PS related is slower than it used to be. Lightroom is updated to latest 5.3 and Mac OS is Mavericks, Camera is 5D Mark III so pretty big RAW files
How do you normally do it and what am I doing wrong?
- I have a USB 3.0 Lexmark CF card reader connected to the RIGHT USB port on my MBP (right one is faster then the left one!), UDMA 7 card so fastest possible, I tried to find a thunderbolt card reader but couldn't find any
- Then I import photos as DNG, minimal preview, no presets etc. Now, I normally import them to an external 1TB hard drive connected via USB, admittedly I don't think it's the fastest and connection via USB doesn't help either. I've tried importing photos to built in SSD and there is an improvement in performance, however how do I use the catalogue feature if I move the DNGs later to the external hard drive? I only have 120GB SSD on the Mac so I try to have as little stuff on it as possible.
- Shall I invest in one of those: http://www.lacie.com/Uk/products/product.htm?id=10... ? But then looking through the specs, the HD seems slow anyway at 5400rpm so that would be a bottleneck again for importing photos straight to it and editing them from there, even connected via thunderbolt.
Is my system really too slow? It was fine when I got it, adjusting photos was instantaneous etc. Admittedly RAW files from 5D are bigger than from 60D or 6D which I had before but would it make that much of a difference?
I'm pretty happy with the 13" RD MBP + 27" TBD. I've been going over what shall I do for last few days and I'm beginning to be really fed up with it.
Shall I sell the current set up (PITA) and get an iMac and a i7 8GB Air for when travelling (a lot, so a must)?
I'm assuming iMac 12,2 / i7-2600 / 16GB 1T+256SD even if not the latest, will be considerably faster for photos and video than my current MBP?
Or top spec Mac Mini since I already have TBD, keyboard, etc? But it doesn't have a dedicated GPU and I do edit more and more HD videos...
Or shall I get an i7 15" MBP (not having to sell the TBD display ) but then it's a bit big and heavy and I wanted to shave the weight not add.

Hmmm, that's much faster then mine!
Two more question - do you apply spot adjustments to photos? If you do, is there a lag behind the cursor or does the photo change when you click on it?
And when re-cropping, there's also some weird lag which wasn't there before: after initial cropping when I go back to it crop changes to some different proportions and then after few seconds it gets back to what I wanted it to be. Is that just my machine?
