From yesterday's "Daily Express" by David Pilditch

PC Shane Bird was delighted when he landed his dream job ... BiB two years ago.

He put his heart und soul into hunting down the baddies and he was successful...winning awards too successful

His old school chums had become career criminals....they daubed his house with graffiti, vandalised his car, threatened him in the street - oon and off duty....

He was shopping in the High Street mit his 4 kittens (aged 11 to 2) when they tried to pick a fight with him.

He was based in Bath and has been transferred to Bristol as result of this. He wanted to stay in Bath but believes safety of his family must come first - too right

PC Bird says "People who knew me from school are incredulous at my new incarnation in Police Uniform actually arresting them.!"

PC Bird grew up in Bath, worked as landscape gardener and applied to join police 4 times before being accepted in 2002.

Because of his knowledge of the city of Bath and its criminal hotspots, PC Bird made impact on the crime rate there.... he - er - - er actually arrested thieves and vandals.

Most of the people he arrested were ... er people ... er ... he went to school with ....

Jawohl ... crossed my mind ... one way of getting back at the old school bully ...

PC Bird says "Because I am local people seem to object to being arrested by someone they know! I am very pro-active. I am out day and night and I have dealt with a lot of different incidents. Baths is too small to hide.... I use my local knowledge - I know where they hide" und not one mention of a speed camera

PC Bird says they would rant that they had been arrested by a gardener und get all in lather about it, knocking off his helmet and screaming obscenities

Despite this PC Bird says he still enjoys his work and ist not going to let bullies jeopardise his career. Avon & Somerset's Acting Assistant Chief Constable praised the young "Probationer of the Year" nominee - stating that he is dedicated, honest and competent who really works hard to detect crime and improve the quality of life for the people in Bath.

=======================================

Glad to see that he has not been put off..... even better to see that he actually catches criminals.

How much of problem is perception of "local boy copping his ex-mates" for BiBs....

What advice could our resident BiBs give to young BiB facing similar?

Think about it, you've just managed to become a policeman after applying many times.

You know the town, you know people in the town. Some of these people are more than slightly dodgy.

While your not going to use the knowlege that your best mate keeps a little bit of puff in a tin in his kitchen, you are going to use the knowledge of the less salubrious characters to your advantage.

I can happily name at least a dozen car thieves, burglars etc (and the same names do appear multiple times under various categories) however I cant PROVE it. Were I BiB then I would be looking into these guys VERY closely.

This does raise the question, is it worth becoming a BiB in your home town or is it better to move away to start your career? From a family, respect and personal safety point of view?

I guess its always going to be difficult, but sooner or later they are going to come into contact with someone they know

The trick would be to get as far away as possible bearing in mind traveling costs and times to try and make this less of an occurence

But didn't it used to be the rule that you couldn't be posted to your home town. Times they are a-changin'
