Started to get a bit of play in the steering. Not very much but sufficient to start causing concern. Anyone experienced this with their Cerbera and know of any obvious checks to do before I take it in to be looked at?

If you a do a search for steering rack you should come up with something. One of our resident Cerb owners likes to take his car apart at the slightest excuse and has recently played with his rack after similar problems.

Okay,,,,,,,,

Get the woman to sit in the car and wiggle (the steering wheel). Ignore the extraneous noise, that'll be her talking and concentrate under the front drivers side wheel arch.

Tell her shes doing a great job while communicating that she needs to wiggle just less than when you can see movement at the wheel.

Now grab hold of the steering shaft as it appears and feel for movement. If no movement then the steering wheel is about to come off in your girlfriends (giving you the benefit of the doubt) hands. Tighten steering nut and curse the last idiot who owned your car.

If you can feel movement, and the road wheel isn't moving, reach with your fingers as far down the shaft as you can. By this time you will also be needing to give verbal encouragement to said woman who will be complaining of wrists aching or general boredom. At the end of the shaft will will feel the flange after the universal joint as is dissapears into the rack. You won't be able to see it just feel it.

If that isn't moving then its one of your universal joints on the shaft. If it is moving then you indeed have a rack problem and the next step will be to take the engine panel out just behind your radiator. By this time woman will be long gone, and you will have entered the joolz zone. If you get this far and decide you wanna more diagnosis talk, repost grasshopper and we'll work out whether its just an adjustment or we'll talk you through removal and renovation, your journey into a meaningful life.
