Hello.

I had a thread on here about mg zt's a few months ago, i tried one out and didn't like it, so decided to stick with my celica.

My circumstances have changed somewhat in that time and I definately need a 5dr! I'm selling my 03 Celica, and my mk1 golf with a mk3 td engine to fund it, so the budget will be circa £3k.

The car needs to be within the last 10 or so years, either a large hatchback or estate, and entertaining enough for me to not miss the mk1 too much, and lastly not crazy on fuel. I was thinking of a mk1 Octavia vrs either estate or hatchback, but apart from an impreza that's me all out of ideas!

Over to you...

"Fun" isn't a word I'd associate with an Octavia. Immensely "capable" certainly, but not really "fun".

These things really are fast and roomy, but I wouldn't consider them to be fun, they are capable yes, but not exactly a driving machine as it were.

Great car though.

Depends on the sort of fun you're after, but how about an E36 (or possibly E46) 328i wagon?

MG ZS - more fun than a ZT and handles better.

Primera gt. 150bhp fast steering and great chassis. Watch out for rust and driveshafts.

Costs peanuts as well.

I've had bmws in the past and loved them - I had an e30 318is and an e46 325ti, however e46s in my budget look a bit leggy, and the e36 is too old really.

MG wise I had a Rover on mg zs suspension which was fun, but it cost me £275!

I guess fun isn't the word - I'll rephrase it to be capable/quick enough etc!

Thanks so far.

I have an octavia vrs. It's not an estate but the boot is huge. I wouldn't call it fun in the slightest but it's a great car for the money. I've had it 3 years now and aside from general maintenance it's been faultless.
I'd DEFINATELY recommend one but don't expect it to make you smile as it won't. It's plenty quick enough but not especially entertaining in the corners.

Could you squeeze into an early Mk2 Octavia VRS for that money? Very complete all round package

Isn't the ride supposed to be pretty bone-breaking on these? Just wondering as I considered one but this is what put me off.

Not at all. !5 or 16 inch wheels with a decent profile tyre as standard.

Feels 'sporty' due to fast steering and a pretty rigid chassis for its time.

Far far better than the equivalent ford vauxhall offerings in the same price bracket. I'd even buy one over a similar age beemer.

Great cars at that price point and even the 1.6 sport is a good drive.

I'd say the same about the Octavia VRS on the OP's list to be honest. An excellent car in many respects, but not especially fun to drive.

FWIW it seems that ST220's are now just about falling into the OP's budget, though not particularly nice examples I suspect.

How about a V6 Alfa 156 Sportwagon? If too juicy maybe look at the twinspark 2.0, or the rather nice sounding 5 cylinder diesel?
