Im a 20 year old male trying to get insurance on a decent car, at the moment i drive a Golf mk5 and am paying around £500 a year.

But as soon as I try gettin quotes for anything better the quotes are just unbelievable.

The best company ive found is Aviva who are charging in the region of £1200-£1500 for 3 litre diesel luxobarges like a 730d,S320 cdi etc. But what im really after is something like an Audi S3 or Bmw 335i.

Ive tried getting quotes for when i turn 21 too, but the prices only drop by a little bit.

Could anybody point me in the right direction on which insurer will be best for me.

Thanks

At 20 with a VW Golf TDI living in London and only paying £500 per year for insurance? I'd keep the Golf for at least another year with that price.

Aviva really aren't keen on over 200hp (approx) or 3 litres (at that age group) - try something like an E34 525i or similar as they seem to be quite cheap to insure.

Looking at your user name, have you done up your TDi to look like an R32?

If so, have you declared your mods to the insurance company?

At that age I used to find Elephant/ Admiral/ Bell gave the consistently lowest quotes even on quicker stuff

I thought diesels are the fastest cars on the road so you should keep it lol

Only joking, it's a tough one... I did the same and spent a fortune on insurance when I was younger on dream cars (of that age) on cheap and in need of tlc gti's rs turbos etc etc. Nowadays I wished I saved the cash on the insurance and instead used it when the premiums came down to buy something newer and faster.

Is this for real? The insurance companies prices are as individual as you are so it is pointless asking for recommendations, some will be good for some, others will be good for others - and at the age of 20 you should know this. Why don't you do what everyone else does, and either use price comparison web sites, or just spend some time and ring every broker up?

I'm staggered, but then if you're after an S3 or a 335 you've probably not got much imagination...

I took out my current policy at 20 for both my RX-7 and RX-8 and pay £1500 combined.

Elephant/Admiral and Bell are without doubt the best for our age group.

£500 for a Golf in London aged 20, I'm guessing you have it insured in your parent's name.
