The aperture in the fabric/leather for the door release knob will be tight…
Main knob can be removed via allen key to famously awkward screw in the front of the 'golf ball'.
I split the stitching a bit to get it out; I can't see it under the golf ball - but your choice really. You may be lucky and have enough play in the aperture anyway.

They may quite likely have given you a load of bum info based on later cars....

Remove the screws under the rear 'tray' so the console lifts a bit.
Undo the handbrake linkage (slackening the cable adjuster fully is sometimes enough)
Screw off both the gear knob and door knob.
Remove the handbrake handle grip.
Check if there are screws at the front into the trans tunnel by your knees (some do some don't)
Forget trying if you haven't done all the above!
Pull the handbrake all the way up, the console is hinged/hooked at the front so you have to lift it up at the back (gear lever really is an obstruction) until you can release it at the front. Turn & wiggle off the handbrake.
Several have cut off the tabs and rely on existing (or added them) screws at the front to ease the process. I think a few have modified the gaiter so that can be removed as well.

I`ll take this all into account, thing is I can`t see any screws or bolts anywhere, saving this bother all up for the weekend 93...

Did my handbrake cable yesterday on a 1995 model so had to remove this myself, 2 screws at front and 2 at back. No need to remove door release knob as the gaiter will pull over it even though its tight, just get your hand underneath rather than pulling on the console. Will also lift over handbrake if you tilt it right up at the back so no need to mess with the cable.

OP Check this out first if it is the "ball" that is loose. On my 96 the Ba
d grub screw had come loose and would not operate the door opening. (just a thought)
