Its been covered before (benefits etc, although dont hesitate to remind me as I havn't done a search yet
) but how much did engine size matter to you personally when you were buying your cerbera? Or didn't it matter one iota?
Both vatieties go like shit off the proverbial shovel, and whilst it may be wise to snap up a 4.2 if the 4.2 you fine one is everything you wanted your cerbera to be, but were there any folk here who waited longer, to find the 4.5 version of their ideal cerbera?
Also, anyone know the ratio of 4.2's to 4.5's built?
Finally, Im assuming its the new TVR's which are pushing down cerbera prices so drastically? Havnt seen it mentioned but assume this is definitely the case. Its great for first time buyers, but seeing 30k knocked off a cerb with only 12k miles(!) only adds to the adage "A car is the worst investment you can make" especially in the case of the cerbera. Financially speaking of course, but then none of us buy these cars as an investment, obviously!
Sorry if this has been covered before, just thinking about the future.

My driving ability wouldnt know the difference between a 4.2 & a 4.5
I bought mine for the bragging rights and coz it was yella. Apparantly there's not much, if anything, between them until way up in the
mph and I dont suppose I am brave enough to hang on that far to find out even if a 4.2 did try it on. Not on public roads anyway.
BUT, in the pub no 4.2s going to touch me
I moved from a 350i to an early 4.0 Griff, which to be honest, I found to stay close enough to a 500 up until the bottle went (theirs, not mine, for a change). It was a fantastic car but I always had the nagging in the back of my mind I should have got a 500 (at the time the early 500s wheren't the best built) and decided I wouldnt make the same mistake with the Cerb. Though of course I wondered whether I should have got an LW or Red Rose, but after Austec's help I am now happy with my lot
Hmm, now then Ash, where are you having The Phoenix resurrected?

Crikey Bob, just go out and buy one for fecks sake.
If you find one with the right interior/exterior colour combination and has been looked after correct, then buy it! Chances are you'll never see the combination again but with a different engine size.
It's a bit pointless opening up the whole 4.2/4.5 thing again.

I think you misinterpreted my post. Perhaps my fault for not explaining properly mate. I wasnt asking which to go for, I was asking who here had a debate (with themselves) about whether or not to wait for the one they wanted (engine size) hoping the right colours etc would turn up. If Im the only one who ever debated the issue, then I'll debate it alone
I didnt mean to bring up the old 4.2 vs 4.5 issue, and tried to make that clear in my initial post.Hi Bob, I went through this recently. At first I was totally blinkered and it was the 'daddy' 4.5 I was after but then I read so many threads on here and came to the conclusion that they are both blisteringly quick cars, and ultimately any difference on the road can be negated by driver skill. I'm only still learning to drive mine, and I doubt I'll ever get near to its limits on the public road - if that was my only aim I'd have got an Evo or something! In the end I decided that finding a well looked after and cosseted car was the most important factor.....
I must admit when buying mine I had always wanted the 4.5. The reason being that I was only ever going to buy 1 Cerbera and just thought I might as well get the top dog or else I would be always thinking what it would be like, plus I think the it always best to have the top of the range. (Plus I think it comes with a bit better spec as standard, but as stated already, spec can be altered over time)
I went along to the dealers when I finally had plucked up the courage to buy one, after seeing a gorgeous crystal topaz one on their website. It was my first ever drive in one, and nothing could have prepared me for the adrenalin rush I experienced, I think I shook for the 20 miles home! That was a 4.2 and I would have bought it there and then if the Mrs hadn't dragged me away to think. Thankfully she did as when I thought more about it, although the outside was perfect the inside was all black leather ( I had always wanted cream and blue). Anyway I went away on hols and when I came back it had sold, however they now had the perfect one, 4.5 Cream and blue leather, less miles and the deal was done.
I actually think the 4.2 (decatted) I drove the first test drive was quicker, and am sure it was until I had my power zapping internally combusted cat replaced, and now I'm so glad I got the 4.5, its definitely quicker, sounds a hell of a lot healthier on start-up, and even though we all know that 420bhp is not the true figure, it sure feels good telling people that.
I suppose I haven't really answered the question. I'm glad I got the 4.5 as it was always the one (in the back of EVO anyway) that I wanted, and you know you can't get better (other that rr), I think it always feels good having the top one, especially if you find the colour and spec that suits you.
Oh bugger still don’t think I have answered it, I think anyone would prefer to have a 4.5 over 4.2 or speed 6, its just you buy these cars with your heart, and if you see one you love, then you buy it, Christ I almost bought a speed 6!

Maybe a bit harsh I suppose.
I didn't wait at all for the right engine size, I saw the car I liked and bought it - turned out to be a 4.5 which was handy. I sold that a bit later, regretted the decision so decided to buy another one.
Saw a few cars which didn't measure up in one way or another, 4.5's included, then along came my current steed and I couldn't resist it - I bought it. The fact it's a 4.2 doesn't worry me in the least.
Breaking cover again before I head off east again.
Having had both a 4.2 & 4.5, these are some of my thoughts.
My '96 4.2 easily had more of a kick from a standing start and pulled better
up to about 70mph.
The throttle seemed more sensitive and it was easier to put the back out and 'play'.
It sounded like it was on it's last legs at start up until warm and felt more like
a race car than my later 4.5.
Far more basic and quirky too.
The 4.5 was a better car once at 70 - it just took off at the point.
It also held the road better, although the AVO's would have helped a great deal.
The 96 4.2 felt ever bump like it was a rock and I could carry a good 40 - 50mph
on poor roads on the later 4.5.
I had 165 on a runway with the 4.2 and it felt like there was only a little left.
I had 165 on a short 'runway' (
) in the 4.5 and the loud pedal had plenty left.
The '98 4.5 was a beautiful car to drive - Le Mans was an epic trip.
I never had any inner fear of breakdown as I had with my first Cerbera and
as a 'family tourer' it was perfect.
The 4.5 will hold a better price than a 4.2, although there seems little reason.
I'd have either again and I'm sure a newer 4.2 would have many of my later 4.5 finesse.
I miss the car badly, as does my wife and my daughter wept for hours when it went.
A Cerbera will return when things calm down a little and as to which it would be?
I'd be happy with either - for very different reasons.
Many of these thoughts perhaps relate to age more than 4.2 vs 4.5, so try several
of each on for size and see how they fit Sir.
Good luck.

To be honest I havent tried the 4.5!!! I only have a lowly 4.2 but it's great.
It was cheaper than the equivalent 4.5, parts are cheaper, insurance is cheaper and it's apparently more 'raw' than the 4.5.
Try a few and see what you like!!! If you come up to yorkshire I'm sure you can get a number of rides in the local cars to see what takes your fancy. I'll definatly offer you a ride in a 4.2.
Question is.... can you really tell the difference????

4.2
Detail:
4.2 has wilder cams, and the earlier ones tend to have higher compression.
Results:
Better low end performance upto around 60-70.
4.5
Detail:
More of a bang in at around 50 - whence she climbs to 100mph around a whole second or more quicker. Smoother engine, but more capable of catching you out whilst driving.
Results:
Pain in the arse!
What should you get?
Neither! They'll fall apart the moment you drive it onto your driveway!
Again, I'm a hypocryt so dont listen to me, but if it happens - remember 'I told you so!'...
