Organising a Dyno Day at Thorney MS - good idea?
Discussion
Happy new year folks
Looking to arrange a dyno day in the near future for a bunch of older 911s - wondering if anyone has experience of the setup at Thorney MOtorsport?
Cooling is key for 911s, however most places *look* as though they're setup primarily for front engined cars. Thorneys setup with re-positionable cooling fans (front and rear) appears ideal.
So, any experience of the general setup, professionalism, dyno accuracy etc

Hi. I got referred here so thought I might as well answer.
We've moved location so the new set up is very different to what we had at MK, the new cell is smaller so it heats up less and has greater interchange of air (less air to change out means it gets heated up less too) which was the issue with MK. We still use the same 37,000cfm fans (3 of them, we dont need the 4th) so we can drive airflow round the car to the intakes and the rear part of the cell is a false wall so the air is effectively sucked out.

Thanks Thorney (If that's John, we exchanged emails earlier today
)
Will you plot bhp, ft lbs an air/fuel ratio as part of the cost ? The air fuel ratio graph has been useful on previous dyno runs to allow owners to request new DME chips to be burnt to account for 99Ron, exhaust changes etc, with great results.
I'll be in touch once I've gathered responses on numbers etc

Gear choice depends on the ratios, what you're looking for is a 1:1 ratio climb on the graph so usually its 3rd gear but can be 4th, depends on the car.
Ref graphs, yes, I'm constantly asked by people for explanation why power is high or low on various different dynos but frankly without afr, intake temp and boost (if turbo) a simple power/torque chart is meant less for the purposes of analysis.
We've not done dyno days for years now, mainly as they are such loss leaders in terms of revenue, I don't believe in the 3 runs get em out theory on dyno days that some run, I'd rather run the car long enough to get an idea what it's doing and or show up any issues, that could take 3 runs or a lot more.
However we've built this new workshop to run more dyno events, the cell has been designed for that reason so the more we do the better really.

Stink foot, I imagine that' was a. Bm3w day, great site but most people knew each other so I imagine it might have been a bit alien? I don't really go on any forum now sadly.
You are probalbly right. Your hospitality was superb and i remember your dad in charge of the bbq. A few years ago now and i still have the Radio Jacky mug too !Herman Toothrot said:
No problem using Charlie's place, In fact I was there last weekend as part of the PH day (with a shocking low result
)Need somewhere more central than Surrey though!
