What am I doing wrong with this game?

I can put 20 shots into an enemy plane and it gives me a "oh well shot sir, have a point". But the plane carries on flying.

Yet I an minding my own business and within 1/10th of a second of someone shooting me my wing falls off!!?? Or my pilot dies. Or the engine catches fire. WTF?

I've not played on the PS4 (PC for me), but it's a combination of (1) some planes have cannons and seem to do critical damage type 1 shot kills and (2) some players target the cockpit and get pilot kills.

The lead-indicator seems to be at the centre of the plane, so try aiming slightly ahead of the lead indicator and go for a cockpit shot.

Also, in my experience the Russian planes seem to be a little buffed compared with other nations, so try those if it's kills you want...

I aim at it, in front of it, to the side of it, ahead of it. Sometimes I get hits, sometimes not.

It seems so far I just get to within 10ft of the back to the enemy plane and fire, that seems to at least hit them.
