Should I buy an extra years' Warranty??
Discussion
Hi experts!!!!
The AM warranty on the V8V roadster runs out in March but we have been quoted £1800 for an extra years' warranty - I would love your advice?? We are going on a long trip in the car this year and the peace of mind is appealing but then as ex TVR owners we are used to feeling a little nervous anyway
Your thoughts would be most welcome??

As the car and Astons are new to you - yes for the first year, just for the peace of mind. Lots of us here have stopped buying the warranty, but that because we know our cars.
Haven't had warranty for two+ years. This year had it really badly smoking (now nicknamed the 2 stroke by my friends). Was a faulty oil valve which meant oil was getting into the inlet manifolds. Part was ~ £70, labour, most of it cleaning the inlet manifolds ~£700. Still a big saving on the annual warranty.

My opinion: No. Simply put the cash away. If you need it, then it's there, if you don't, it's still there, unlike if you shell out for a warranty. Bear in mind most expensive consumables on your car are not covered, clutch being one of them. They are pretty reliable motors so you shouldn't get a big bill.
That said, you may find you have a run of bad luck with several minor issues, which could of course equate to or even exceed the cost of the warranty.
Your choice, as ever, but I haven't renewed mine. HTH.

I am like you as I am planning a trip to see a close Friend who works at Ferrari in Italy in May / June this year and we thought we'd take the DB9 and go the 'long' way to explore Europe a little (and the car on some fantastic roads)
.
Thought long and hard and took the plunge and purchased the extra piece of mind as you hope you never have to use it, but as was shown in the famous Top Gear episode where the Noble (I think) driven by 'the Hamster' breaks down, the man with the tow van arrives - makes a series of phone calls and then drives off and leaves you stranded doesn't appeal so at least with AM cover:
1) You call the UK
2) They arrange everything and if the car can't be repaired within a sensible amount of time they fly you home 'Club Class'
3) They get a bloke with a van to deliver your car on a transporter to your local AM dealer back in the UK
To me and my 'luck' its better for the piece of mind (although £1800 was a bitter pill to swallow).
Hope that helps.

This question is often asked and it depends on your risk appetite.
Most main dealer cars come with a one year warranty and then, after which one knows the car a little better, one makes a judgement.
Quite a lot ,me included ,then don't bother and pray (a lot).
The downside of the £2k guarantee is when you have a problem and it is not under the warranty, that is very frustrating.
So ....do you feel lucky , babe ?
P.S. You have been doing a lot of excellent posting but I am rather concerned this might be getting in the way of your ironing, washing the undies etc.

- Cough* - I giggled so much I spilt my G&T dharling!!
TY for your compliment on all the postings - but don't worry the ironing etc etc etc can wait - I would like to say I have staff to do it but I dont!!!!! So it WILL havee to wait!!!

As avinalarf says, it depends on your risk appetite. A large chunk of that £1,800 is literally for peace of mind. Clutch aside, which I wouldn't worry about much until above 30k miles at least, you'd have to be very unlucky to need £1,800 of repairs-covered-by-warranty in one year. Since many repairs are not covered by warranty, that could imply maybe £5,000 in total repairs, of which £1,800 would be under warranty.
In my first four months, I've needed a new tyre (puncture), a new front light ballast (mysteriously became faulty while sitting at the dealer's repair garage) and a new battery (the old one was six years old). Around £1,200, not covered by the warranty. So, the warranty has been useless, except it covered the tow to/from the dealer. I got it 'free' anyway from the dealer, so not too bothered, but I doubt I'll renew.

havnt bothered since it ran it 4 years ago...had a few well documented things like thermostat and aux belt pulleys but nothing else untoward in 66K miles of fun
most expensive thing last year was aircon compressor unit I got one from Aston Martinbits.com for £250 ish and fitted/gassed up for similar
so far saved about £5K on not having a warranty/repair insurance
there are loads of threads on this...pretty much every new owner asks the same thing

I bought my V8 from Grange Brentwood last Jan, it has warranty until June 2014.
The only problems I have had is the thermostat and the window module.
It had a Mot today and I asked them to give it the once over, all seems ok.
Having read Previous posts about warranties or not, I personal will take a chance and put the money to one side
and hopefully will not need it.
It's a hard choice.

I bought my MY09 V8V new, so I knew the car well when I had to make this decision - I did not by the warranty. In the 1 year+ so far, my total cost for repairs is $0.00. The only thing that's gone wrong is the fuel filler cap -- it started to stick a few weeks ago (more than a year out of warranty) when I tried to open it. My (excellent) dealer fixed it in about 15 minutes, free of charge.
Hi VantageBabe, I'm in a similar position (no pun intended avinalarf before you say it
)so because the car is new to me it has a one year warranty on it currently but once the first year runs out I will bite the bullet and renew it for a further eyar, just really for peace of mind to be honest. To me its like any other form of insurance and all down to risk profile - I could save a lot of money over the years and just take TPF&T as opposed to fully comp but I dont want to underwrite the risk myself so all about peace of mind.
Good luck on not spilling the G&T by the way and Avinlarf how much longer do I need to wait for the ladybirds to come out of winter hibernation please ?
happy 2014

The premium warranty pretty much covers everything, the plus covers mechanical and electrical "critical" items. So Premium covers the audio system the plus does not, but the plus does cover heated seats etc.
I went for the plus on the basis that if the worst does happen, the car will still be rolling. £1400 is not a lot of money but it does buy piece of mind. Over the last year on two V8V cars (one 4.3 one 4.7) other than consumable service items, I have had:
1x wheel bearing (warranty)
1x thermostat (warranty)
1x Heated seat element (warranty)
1x Annoying rattle (£300 not warranty)
1x sticky handbrake calliper (done during service)
Probably doesn't add up to £1400 worth of work but if its anywhere near £1k then the warranty is a very cheap insurance policy I hope I don't claim on.
Conversely, our DB9 was bought privately and have not put a warranty on it. In the first year it cost £1500 in repairs that would have been covered.

A lot of audi r8 owners use UVW instead of audi as it's said to be a lot cheaper and they do a wear and tear inclusive option. They also do/did 3 years for about double a 1 year policy. I can't comment on an Aston but they seem to cover performance cars and know the market. I can't comment on their service, like all these things the forums are full if good and bad stories.
