Well..... What a difference! Tried the ol girl out today with her type 9 fitted in place of the type 5 and it's transformed the car. The gearstick feels like it's attached to something now, it appears to pull better in each gear aswell, even managed a gentle powerslide round a wet roundabout at low revs in 2nd which would never have happened with the old box. Now just gotta get the speedo cable sent off to have the correct end fitted on it to go into the gearbox and await delivery of my new quick shift gear stick. Well chuffed smile 5 speed conversion definitely worth it in my eyes.

Sorry zig, I've become attached to her, you can't have her back! smile I'm itching to go and give her a blast but my proxy quick shift ain't turned up yet and without it I can't get into 5th as the gear stick that's in the car at the moment hits the handbrake before I can find 5th frown it appears the ol girl has a bit of a weep from the passenger front shock absorber so before m.o.t I'll get a set of Gaz with new springs I think biggrin rear pads are getting low too, it's an expensive game tinkering with cars!

weeping....
It is about that time for the rear pads, Im sure they were done a couple of years ago..Check the hand brake pads as they were not changed but were ok when they were checked..The suspension is the original and so was on my long list of "To do"..But never made it to the "Done list"..I was going to replace with stock type from RT Racing but never got round to it..
Please sort the breather out on the tank as that is playing on my mind..You will save about £80 a month on the fuel bill..

Just a thought...If you are changing the front suspension then weld a stiffener on the O/S top mount as it has always been slightly bent, Its never got any worst but if you are dropping the legs then might be worth doing...Hopefully she will be ready for the Burghley House meet on the 13th and the "Wedge with Wings" Calendar shoot in the spring.. Can you tell her that i miss her...Cheers...Ziga

I may use it for a week or so before I take the tank out, keep everything moving as I don't want it seizing up. I think it was ml performance that I saw the gaz shocks, plus they do new springs too, so will order the lot together. Jus gotta get saving! Will have a go at welding a plate onto the bent mount.

Will let her know that you miss her smile

Littlywooly - So the Type 9 was a straight bolt-in? Other than the cable, any fabricating or issues at all? Did you have to pull the motor or was it all done from underneath? I need to redo a clutch and really am thinking about the conversion although I may have source the Type 9 from your side of the pond. Seems easier that modding a T-5. Thanks Grady

Hi Grady, the deciding factor which got Toby ( little wooly ) going on the change was when a modded gear lever bush fell into the guts of the 4 speed box when driving so that was it, box came out without moving the engine but he had to separate the bellhousing from the box to get them both down and out. Before putting the type 9 in he fitted a new gearstick bottom bush and filled with new gear oil, found the opening in the fibre glass for gear stick was ok, fitted a new spigot bearing into back of crank (4 speed had a bronze bush which had to be replaced with type 9 roller bearing) the box was lifted up into the chassis rails first and pushed as far back as possible with its rear supported to stop it dropping then the flywheel was bolted on followed by aligning and bolting up the clutch, bellhousing was offered up to bolt on to box but he found he didn't have room to reach the securing bolts inside as the bellhousing couldn't go back far enough away from flywheel to get his hand in because it was hitting on chassis rails. Next plan then was to use a 3 and 1/4" hole saw to cut a hole in the bottom of the bellhousing between any raised areas of the casting which took a little while and about 8 x 5mm holes around the perimeter for securing bolts to hold a cover plate. Then bellhousing back up to gearbox making sure to get release arm and bearing sat resting on the input shaft but NOT clipped together yet. With some shimmying of the two he got bottom bolts in first and nimble fingers got the top two in, used a uj 17mm (wobble) socket on a long extension bar through the main opening to tighten. Once the box and bellhousing were together the release arm needs to be located on its pin within the bellhousing and the bearing clipped on to the arm. Whole assembly was then shifted forwards onto the engine and bolted up but DONT let it hang on the clutch otherwise youll knacker it. Made up a plate to bolt over the access hole and secure it with self tappers or tap out the casting holes for machined screws but not too long otherwise they may clash with flywheel.
He did use me to help hold the bellhousing, fetch tools and make tea etc. Just waiting on a speedo cable now and a quick shift gearstick because its straight, the one that came with it has a dog leg in it which hits the chassis rail when going for 5th gear, not sure yet if quick shift will need modifying, he has driven it and cant believe how much better it feels, will fill you in when gearstick and speedo cable arrive and get fitted. John.( bigger wooly )

So am I to understand that the drive shaft didn't need to be modified for the conversion?

I am in the USA and I'm very interested in doing this modification. I have a couple of Type 9 transmissions from Merkur XR4tis. It is my understanding that these transmissions although they came from a four cylinder car have the longer input shaft of the V6 transmissions.

Did you use the long input shaft transmission on this swap?

The propshaft didn't need any modification , the splines are the same on the back end of both boxes, one thing you do need to do when looking for a type 9 is make sure you buy one thats for a v6, as you say the input shaft is longer for v6 type 9 boxes.

You will need a gearbox with the long input shaft. The input shaft should extend beyond the bellhousing surface where it bolts to the engine. If it doesn't then it's probably no good for the Cologne V6.

I've got one sitting in the garage if you need any photos or measurements.
