Long story, cut short.

Bought a family hack in August 2013 (Nissan Qashqai). I was told the car would have a service, mot etc before I picked it up.

4,000 miles later, the service indicator is coming on. I've spoken to the dealer and they have said they 'forgot' to reset the indicator but according to their computer they did do an oil change on the car.

I don't quite believe them and I dont want the indicator resetting if they didn't do the service. Other things have made me doubt they have done it - but is there anyway to tell 4000 miles later?

I doubt it but thought I would ask.

If it's just a minor service and the car is a keeper get it done. It's the only way you can be sure it's done.

Did they stamp the SH? Can they provide an invoice for the work completed? If not, they didn't do it.

Without going into some form of chemical analysis on the oil then no, there would be little you can do to prove that the oil wasn't changed.

My advice is to find out how to reset the indicator yourself (or get them to do it) and then change the oil yourself for piece of mind.

Depending of the type of filter on it, if it's a canister type then see if it's genuine or pattern. Then ring up and see what they fit. You can sometimes catch them out this way.

Thanks all.

I am off to see them at lunch. If they can provide paperwork I'll let them reset it then do a quick oil change myself to be sure.

On another note, when I bought the car I got a 1 year warranty with it. The warranty is backed by them (they are a 'car supermarket' in Oldham) but I didn't get ANY paperwork relating to it. Is this normal? All I got was a "What's covered" booklet, but nothing states I have a warranty with them.

Looking in to it further, on Judge Service it appears I am not the only one who didn't receive paperwork and one posted said that Trading Standards said it was illegal??

The oil filter should have a date stamp on it, either as a date, or a batch code which can give you a date... With fast moving parts like oil filters, I wouldn't expect it to be more than 3 or 4 months (if that) older than the date on which the service was carried out.

Nothing cynical about that.

Everyone you pay to do work will probably lie.

Simply send them an e-mail confirming that you have the warranty booklet and as you understand it have the warranty that the booklet describes on the car that they sold you for another six months.

I had this with my Jag, service indicator came on shortly after buying it. Tried to catch them out, failed, switched all my servicing to my trusted local guy smile

Well no. If the service was part of the sale, then there wouldn't necessarily be an invoice for just the service. Also depending on the type of garage/trader they may not stamp service books, or indeed was there even a book to stamp?

No offense, but you, as a legal adult, and as the buyer, are responsible for making sure you are happy before completing the purchase.

I know it's hindsight now, but you really ought to have made sure all the paperwork was present and correct "before" taking final ownership and leaving the forecourt.

You really ought to have inspected the car on that day before you completed also.

It really is much easier to walk away from a deal and say "no thanks", rather than trying to play the blame game and chasing your tail months down the line.
