Gt2 front spoilers make excellent snow ploughs at the ring, parked up after a busy morning clearing the roads
for the locals!!
The roads were savage!and the things we do for customer service eh boys! The trip was 110%,even if the wine was a little expensive.

I'm thinking of driving down in my 993 when I go skiing this Christmas.

Are 911s drivable in these conditions? I don't want to try to find winter tyres, are snow chains needed?

Stupid questions but have only driven in snow about 5 times in my life

You don't need a snowplough or winter tyres - just try Dunlop Formula R tyres down to the legal limit - great fun on the drive back to the ferry.
I thought that the delicate right foot was working well on the Tuesday with ice on the track but dealing with 40ft waggons overtaking at 60mph on single lane roads when I was creeping along at 30mph was far more demanding.
Yes - yet another great trip to the 'Ring.

So was the Ring actually open? I didn't realise Europe had already had a heavy fall of snow

I remember going over there about 3 years ago for the easter weekend. The weather forecast was great and I went in my Caterham. On the Fri & Sat we wre in t-shirts...on the Sunday we woke to 6ins of Snow! Driving the Caterham on ACB10's was a real experience!
Even worse..I'd forgotten to take my roof! (I know..what a pratt!)
Anyway, something I'll never forget and good car control practice. I was amazed they opened the place.

Good question......Hmmmmmmmm maybe time to grab the keys to my father's off roader......

Burzel. I'm guessing you were over there for a trackday as opposed public opening, did everyone get a refund?

Somethings can be taken as said.

More seriously on the topic of snow and the Ring, there is a video somewhere on the Net made by a german tyre company of a red 996 C2 sliding around the Ring. Well worth downloading if you see it anywhere.

Hi No Refund,as the 6inches of snow came on the last night of the 2 day rma event. The monday started fine ,after 2 laps it started to rain and the fog came in.It then froze on monday night with fog as well. The track eventualy thawed out from the frost on tuesday, and was a reasonable day.
Took us 12 hours of cold and slippery roads to drive 500 miles back home in the gt.spent a further 12 hours cleaning the car!
Impressive mpg though ,my gt was doing an average of 10 litres per 100km.And JC,s GT car was doing a average of 8.5 litres per 100km.Hows that for super car performance figures!

Burzel - Savage is the word mate! 120% customer service from the guy with the 4x4 that dragged me up the hill though! I bet you're glad to get back to Black Tower swally now!

Went up to Oulton Park yesterday, lovely bright sunshine and bone dry, bit different to earlier in the week at the 'ring.

Despite the weather, had a blast however.

Dera Cyberface

I would be quite mad to drive through Europe during winter without wintertyres on a 993. I have done the trip many times and would strongly advice against it. Besides, in Austria you are not allowed to drive without wintertyres at all and that could get you in trouble with your insurance if something happens. Chains have a very narrow window of usage i.e. when there is a lot of snow on the road. As soon as the snow is hard and flat you cannot drive more than 30 mph on snow so be prepared to spend 3 days for the trip to the channel. You a pushing your luck without wintertyres on a Porsche and you will regret it - trust me as a Scandinavian I have tried to drive in the cold quite a lot with a Porsche. With proper wintertyres and rear whel drive you will enjoy your trip no doubt.

......strange you go away for 4 days of track driving and the main topic was the weather on the way home!!

I am interest to know what top speeds the GT2s managed on the main straight. We have always worked on Bridge to Gantry time plus 25 seconds, but it took my RS 28 seconds between these points, and a mates fireblade 38 seconds. Admittedly the line under Antoniusbrucke was compromised by the joining traffic and was slightly damp and I didn't want to practice 160mph oversteer. My RS managed a feeble 158 mph. I am sure its as fast through Swedenkreuz (oil spills permitting).

Der sveden is great country for artic driving!
Seriously we have been banned by russel from talking about speed, bhp and and any other technical issues ,as it bores my new found 110% mate, and we would not want to upset him!!Sorry steve its esoteric
To answer your question i have not got a clue,i had to back out of my gt on the straight, its just to stiff and was very unstable on the rough bits.My rs would have run rings around it ! pardon the pun.
Jc and russell may be able to enlighten us.
Great bit of video though,do i detected a comfort dab on the brakes then!
