Hi, am intending to get the front end resprayed to eliminate stone chips etc. Am attempting to get the head light cowls off to ensure a better paint job. Got one cowl(o/side) off easily as the mastic sealant securing the top of the cowl had come unstuck. The second is proving difficult. Have got both wing nut fasteners removed, but the mastic sealant is stuck fast. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Mask off the areas around the cowl so you don't damage the paint work. Get yourself a scalpul knife which are extremely thin and blinking sharp!!. And whilst trying to ease the cowl off cut away the sealant beneath. If you can't get a scalpul, a cheap alternative is a 6 inch rule and grind a sharp edge at one of the ends. Not as good as a scalpul but will slowly cut through the silicon.

Thanks portzi will give your method a try. Might also try a bit of heat to see if the mastic will soften to allow a bit more room.

Nice one portzi, it worked a treat. Used some thin wedges to creat a bit of a gap, warmed it up with the wife's hairdrier and used a wallpaper trimming knife to pare through the mastic from the underside. Thanks for the advice.

Hi, does anyone know if there has ever been a gasket made for the cowl, if not why not? I would buy some and I bet others would.
