What's the best exhaust to make my p38 more woofly
Discussion
As above really chaps, I've bought a lovely old p38 v8 which is completely standard including exhaust. Coming from noisy TVR's it really needs to be a little burblier....it's a 3rd car so the mrs would chew my head off if I spent money so what's a good way?
The whole exhaust is in good nick so was thinking :showingagehere: cherry bombs

I'm running a Rimmer Bros stainless sports system with 200cpi cats. Its been on the car for several years now.
Most people say it sounds nice, but I'd prefer it to be more "woofly", it certainly doesn't sound like a TVR. However, its nice and quiet on the motorway etc.

Interesting topic, I have a 3.5 V8 Defender and I'd like it to sound more TVR-like! I took the centre box out and that was offensively/unpleasantly noisy with lots of popping and banging on overrun, so I put that back and took the rear box out - and it made no difference!
I guess the only real way is headers and a tubular exhaust with some sort of sports silencers/mufflers but that starts to sound expensive for an old hack.

Rover V8's can sound amazingly different. So getting a true TVR sound will either be fluke, or very difficult.
If you want simply to hear the V8 more and make it sound good, then look at removing some of the silencing. And maybe a larger bore pipe work.
A custom exhaust will likely be the best option and likely no more costly than many aftermarket ones (maybe even cheaper than a few). Or lash something together yourself.

Here's 2 video's of my old one.The whole exhaust is in good nick so was thinking :showingagehere: cherry bombs

This was the standard OEM exhaust with cats and simply the middle silencer chopped out and replaced with straight pipe:

This is a video of the final setup, the video doesn't do the sound justice sadly, it was very deep and growly, with pops and burbles on overun, it was a set of RPi decat downpipes and a full Stainless Janspeed system.

I have a P38 with a Janspeed cat back system, Magnaflow do one, as do JE engineering. The Janspeed sounds nice and is available on ebay for reasonable money, the Magnaflow is about £800, but didn't fit because I have a rear anti roll bar retro fitted. The JE system is used with their own anti roll bar, might be worth giving them a call to see if it's still available.
Mine pops a lot on overrun like yours does on the 'final' video Is that because my cats are empty (to go with your decat pipes)? Personally I don't like the popping and am hoping that replacing my cats will solve it.
I am intending to put a Janspeed cat back system on at some point though.

Depends how loud you want to go. I removed the middle silencer on mine and replaced it with a stainless straight through pipe. If anything its a bit too loud but it does sound absolutely gorgeous. I'd recommend just removing the back silencer and this should give the desired 'woofly' effect that you are after (cheap way). Looking at a more expensive option, a full stainless setup would produce the best balance between the V8 burble and not be too intrusive.
I looked into this for my 4.8 litre Defender and tried a host of different combinations. The reality is that a TVR makes that unique sound due to those lovely long manifolds that you see under the bonnet. So, you will never get that exact sound in a Defender / RR.
I played around with my exhaust (already an uprated stainless item when I bought it) for about a month and settled on a cherry bomb where the middle silencer used to be and left the back box on. At low revs and light throttle (on a cruise) it makes a lovely wubba wubba sound but under more load the note synchronises again. It does sound much better from the outside: I have heard it go past and it sounds serious. You can also tell the difference when driving as petrol heads turn their heads to see what is coming. Still doesn't sound quite as good as I would like from inside though…
Start with a cherry bomb in the middle and see how you get on.
