Another "what car thread" 40mpg, estate, relatively fast
Discussion
Gents,
will be potentially looking for a bit of change in the coming weeks and i need some inspiration.
aside from the 535d, what alternatives to this (similar performance and practicality) is there on the market?
requirements
40mpg
estate/4x4
relatively quick/lively (p/xing my e60 M5)
budget is 12/13k
many thanks in advance.

535d touring won't get 40mpg. requirements

LCI one from 57 plate onwards will get to around 36mpg if you're steady, but most at £12/13k will be pre lci and will see between 22-33 averaging about 26mpg.
Merc E320d estate. A mate has run one (05 plate)for 150k, runs 35 to 45 mpg depending how he drives it, has been massively reliable and goes pretty well for what it is. His has the "old" straight six, not the newer V6 and it is still good. V6's are better though, lighter and more fuel efficient. Can't think of much else you'd get a German Shepherd in.

26? Jesus.
I could drop to 35 and it still be viable.
I did around 12,000 miles in the first 3 or 4 months and alot was in France where mpg is better, and it sat at 29mpg, but over the next few months and 10,000 mile it was down to 26mpg and sat there. I could drop to 35 and it still be viable.
Good car, but MPG on the early ones is crap.
I then went 335i touring and that was the same mpg and a much better car all round for fun.
After that I had a facelift E Class estate, E320cdi with the Brabus box on it, that is my favourite all round car that I have owned, gobbled the miles, 35mpg average, 40+ on a fast run and sit at 70 and it would see 45mpg. Complete comfort, handling was fine and after the Brabus was plenty quick enough.
Swapped for the new E Class estate and regretted it straight away, sold it after 6 months.
I am in an older ML at the moment, but can see me buying another S211 E Class at some point, when an E500 estate turns up in the right spec I will jump on it.
