The steering wheel assembly comes out very easily!

It occurred to me yesterday while lying in the drivers foot well just how much easier it is to work down there on the cold air pipes pedals etc without the steering wheel there, I wish I’d know that on the many occasions I've spent in that position before...

It comes out by just taking the height / reach adjuster leaver right out, then there are two plugs, that it’s it! The sliding arrangement for the reach adjustment lets you just slide it right out.

As you can see there is much more space (ignoring the pedal box sitting there, that is NOT easy to take out!)

Always thought it would mean a ribbon re-wire if I tried to take it out.

I always unscrew the Clutch and Brake pedals when I'm under there for a bit more accessibility too banghead

Yes, don't take the steering wheel it's self off, you will end up with ribbon everywhere eek It's the whole unit with the stalks & gauges etc, everything that moves when you adjust the position of the wheel.

Hope it helps some of you.

I think mine is still out, I’ll take a pic when I get home so you can see what to disconnect.

Yes it does, I was looking at them while down there the other day thinking to myself I’d never seen them before...

The connectors can be seen there, the ribbon connector one (from the back of the circuit board), the large blue one & the smaller black one.

There is of course the air pipe too but that should be pretty obvious & easy.

I have got the centre of the dash out at the mo to tidy up that messy wiring, that may be a contributing factor in being able to see the back of the heater controls, I can’t be sure at the mo sorry.

Is it easy to get the centre box out. I need to sort my cig lighter as it fell apart just before Xmas. Obviously you have to be careful of the silver key wiring!!!

I fixed the mounting of my lighter by just taking the ash tray & the stereo out there was just enough room to get in there then, very fiddly though!

This is what the back of it looks like (again please ignore dodgy wiring, more things to fix!)




If your lighter is the same as mine the steel outer body that the light clips on to can have the front part carefully trimmed / ground back (to make up for the thick fiberglass it’s mounted in) so there is more thread for the main lighter body to screw back into. Mine has been fixed firmly in ever since I did that 8 years ago.

If you do want to get the centre box out it is a little involved but not too bad. The wire to the silver switch & lighter is long enough for the whole thing to come out, but make sure it hasn’t become tangled with the stereo wiring.

It can be moved back enough to get the cubby most of the way out to get at the bolts that go down into the top of the chassis under it.





There’s no need to disconnect any wires anywhere.
