My last thread on modern 2 litre petrol turbos seems to have confirmed my belief that manufacturers have set their cars up purely to beat the Euro emissions/mpg test thereby making official mpg figures utter nonsense. Therefore I either get a 2 litre turbo diesel and do high mpg properly or I go completely the other way and get a car that will have me moaning about crap mpg all the time. The flip side of that is at least it will be a good car.

So, if you own a powerful family car could you tell me what mpg you get at 70mph on the motorway? I know that enthusiastic driving will see mpg drop to near single figures, but what can you get if you're trying to drive economically.

Thanks in advance.

If you're worried about fuel bills, don't buy one of these.

As above. Don't do it.

E46 M3

28mpg

I hope you are using the 70mph as a control test as if thats all you're going to be doing, buy a diesel.

Yes, I could imagine that watching the fuel gauge would sap the fun from owning one of these things. If the cost of putting petrol in it is going to be an issue, don't bother.

Id be more concerned with maintenance costs than mpg if money is really a worry.

I never understand posts like these.

I have never given MPG a second thought when considering buying a car.

It's so far down the list of priorities, it's irrelevant.

If your going to own a car like that, you need to have virtually no regard for MPG. I'm on first name terms with the staff at the shell garage.

To answer your question, @70 I can eek out 28MPG from an E92 M3. However, I have done that once and once only - when I first got the car as a test...

For those who don't understand the logic of this, let me explain. My budget is about £25k. I could flex that to nearer £30k for a car with very low running costs or go the other way and get something with high running costs. What I don't want to do is spend a load of money on a car and then think how the hell did I end up with something as boring as that for that much money. On the motorway it is surprising how fuel efficient big engine cars can be, hence the original post.

I'm sure similar sites/apps exist in the UK, but as I live closer to Germany than to the UK, I can't help you with that.

Don't believe you. Rich people don't get rich by not caring about money. Hence the number of luxury cars with economical diesel engines.

Tend to agree with most comments. M cars, AMG's etc will hit you in the wallet at service time. Just putting on fresh set of tyres/brake pads can cost a small fortune. On top of insurance and tax I don't think the difference between 22mpg and 26mpg is your biggest worry. I'm not saying don't go for a high performance car just do your research.

Believe what you want. I've no idea what MPG any of my vehicles do.

To make matters worse the X5 has been changed for a C63 AMG, so looking at my garage do you think I made those choices based on MPG?

Guess again.

From my manual e92 m3 I'm averaging about 20mpg on the commute and have raked out 26mpg on a dual carriageway run taking it very easy. Generally it's about 23mpg on a run.

I would say they are pretty ruinous on fuel if you put the miles on. I noticed a big difference coming from a 3.0si z4, but you pay your money and take your choice. If you're using it for

The commute I'd work out a rough cost for your journey. I work about 14miles away from home so stick £180 away every month for the commuting fuel.
