A long long time ago, armed with a motorcycle when the police cars were generally Austin Allegros, some friends would occasionally wind police officers up and not stop etc.

But today, with all the cameras, helicopters, and the Police driving real cars, why do people think they are going to get away ?

It was this in my local press that made me think why ?

A mate on the force in the eighties told me of similar situations but he said they generally caught up with them in the end one way or another

If you think police helicopters are fast, you will cack your pants when you find out how fast the radio waves go.

Yup - the cops have radio too!

Who would have thought it?

In a Vectra too. Maybe he would have had a chance in a Bowler Wildcat.

Can't see why he hit the back of the toyota it wasn't travelling fast and there was loads of space behind it, surely the Vectra has ABS.

He's in bad shape for a 33 year old.
He doesn't deserve a family if he puts them through that.
The car he hit was completely avoidable.

To sum up- a first class tit.

The answer to the OP's question lies behind the eyes of the gentleman in the linked article.

11 previous convictions for driving whilst banned and still under a current ban are why he tried to out run them I think!
I guess if he pulls over he's nailed, if he tries to run there is a very small chance it may work. Nothing to lose probably in his mind.

Once the helicopter is up you are done for - the only way to beat one of those is to ride like a TT racer, and even then the heli can just cut the corners, so your only chance is to end the pursuit before that is a possibility - there is only two ways to do that, ride or drive like an utterly insane nutter and force them to stop the pursuit for public safety, or lose touch without them seeing which way you went immediately.

In either case, you are stuffed if they have your registration number, as they can just track you down from that.

In short, if they really try to stop you, it is impossible on paper.

Bikes are out as a pursuit evasion vehicle because the slightest mistake and you'll be in the scenery, and a car is out because it just cannot be fast enough in a real situation.

Because of all the health and safety bullst you're probably more likely to get away with it these days than before. All you have to do is drive recklessly and the chase will get called off.

I'm sure if you had your wits about you, you would have a decent chance of evading the police.
The problem is, anyone who does have their wits about them generally isn't the sort of person who needs too.

If you've driven past a cop car whilst going well over a ton I suppose you may as well plant the throttle, get off the motorway at the next opportunity and go park your car in a village. Then walk off to the nearest pub and go drink a lemonade. But if you've got plod behind you and they know who you are, what's the point?

I think they've been through that one, and found it didn't work !

  • Invests in a bland 5 series with rotating numberplate and rear light clusters that change colour. And a fake mustache.

Why bother "get away". You only get a slap on the wrist as a punishment with our current laws........

The answer lies in the sentence. The lenient sentences mean career criminals laugh in the face of the law. He'll be out in 8 months on good behaviour...

Exactly this. That's certainly my impression of our 'justice' system. Police officers calling scum 'mate' and carefully ensuring their heads don't get caught on the door aperture as they ease them into the back of patrol cars etc. It's an absolute joke.
