I just started driving my 2001 6-speed, and the thrust bearing sounds quite noisy to me. Is this a normal situation? When I lift the clutch either in neutral or in 1/2/3 there is quite a lot of bearing noise IMHO. Any thoughts? Is this normal?

Yes and no! For the manual box, from a standing start when you let the clutch out the car sounds like a Skoda. On mine it disappears at about 1000 rpm. This is a design "flaw" and is something to do with the way the cogs mate I think. I have a thread somewhere on this from a US site a couple of years back when I queried it - if you want to know.
Personally though I have never expereinced it in other gears, only when pulling away, and if I keep the revs above 1000 as I pull away I do not experience it. So if that is what you have, dont worry!! Apart from feeeling like you are driving a Skaod of course - I have often wondered what it sounds like from outside

I know there are early and late slave cylinders for the F body and the late items are better so when/if you do a change ask for the later F/Y body version.

My new machine has strange gearbox noises too...
They are high performance cars, with little soundproofing so a few whines and rattles are inevitable.

Interesting set of posts. I dont know about this thing that all manuals have it. I have driven a manual all my life and the C5 is the only car that I have experienced this on, and that includes my C3 too. Hib Halverson's post is the one that accurately reflects my noise. Of course the C3/C5 manuals are the only USA manuals I have ever driven and as much as I love the Vette, GM do not make the greatest gearbox in the World.

I know the engineering is completely different but there's a certain amount of idling noise from the Auto torque tube. Guess it's all related to having the tranny in the back.

Thanks Michael. Very interesting thread/reference, and some of it made me laugh out loud. I'm becoming more relaxed having read that.

You often get a rattle when switching off but there's something in the handbook about turning it off in reverse gear. Seems to work, whatever it does.

I push the clutch in which provides a more classier shut off rather than a Skoda one

Sorry Pete, I crawled through my email over the week end and seem to have lost it
