How many days have the 'anians been allowed in the country? biggrin

Only joking PC brigade smile

Just noticed a big hole where the kidney grille of my '98 (Owned since almost new) e36 Beemer used to be. Silly thing to steal as I have just seen that you can get a pattern part for a tenner delivered next day, but they have severely dented the surrounding metal work with whatever they used to prise it out with.

I really can't be bothered being mad anymore but it is weird that this should happen just when I was thinking of treating myself to something new and interesting next year.

Wouldn't be so calm if something happened to a new car that I had saved for years for frown

Maybe I should just save myself £40k odd and just splash out on a new grille and maybe a new bonnet badge as it is looking a bit sorry for itself.

Pity they've made a mess of the metal. It may well be that the new grille will now be loose (as well as looking worse). That bit of the bonnet is multi-skinned so it's unlikely to bash out

Yeah it is frown Just looked at Youtube to see how to replace the grille and levering it out as it appears to be done, would damage it to the point of making it useless. According to the videos the part is removed by accessing the inside as well as the outside plus having to remove some of the plastic shroud in the engine bay.

Strange what people steal. I had the ST badge nicked from the my boot, which I replaced for £1.99 with free postage from eBay. The little st levered it off with a screw driver, leaving a load of scrapes down to the metal on the boot which I was quoted £300 to repair!

Why didn't they take the one from the front of the car, it was only held on with a foam stickey pad on the grill!

So realising that my old Beemer needed a bit of TLC, I awoke the other morning and got a few emails about purchases I had made on eBay and GSF parts the night before. I must admit that I didn't remember ordering them as I'd had a few wines to many but hey ho biggrin

Yesterday the RH Grille arrived along with a new bonnet badge and a new leather gear stick gaiter. I'd obviously forgotten to order a new gear knob as the original leather one is falling apart.

After a bit of bashing of the damaged metal grille surround, the brand new non original grille, was fitted making the original LH side one look a bit sad and faded. The old and knackered bonnet badge took awhile to prise free but soon a cool new, non original in black and white, roundel was resplendent on the bonnet.

Next was the new gaiter and soon the cockpit smelled of new leather but only for an hour or two until it was again masked by the standard stink of a well used 16 year old car.

Bouyed by my skills of being a mechanic decided to attack the passenger side window which I had jammed in the up position since it separated from it's regulator last year.

I removed the door card that was only held on by one clip, that's why the door kept jamming, to see what I would need.

I visited the local BMW specialist who advised me on what to do and sold me some new clips and a couple of plastic bits to put in the window runners for a few quid. I also had to visit a few DIY stores until I could find the recommended Sticks like Sh*T adhesive for bonding the window to the runners.

The problem of working in the street, as I have no garage, is worrying about the weather, especially with a window out. There was a very dark cloud on the horizon so I had to work quickly.

This is where it all went Pete Tong. I didn't allow the adhesive to bond properly as I was too hasty in trying to get it back in the door and attached to the regulator. The regulator arms would not pop back into the plastic ball joint thingys and the window came apart again. There really isn't much room to access all this and even a few well aimed blows with a hammer wouldn't get it all together biggrinweeping

In the end I had to be satisfied that the window was jammed in the up position again as the first rain drops splattered down.

To top it all, earlier when I was driving around, I hit the down button for my driver's window and it to decided to break free of the regulator. Who would fekin' believe it frown

So now I'm driving my car sans it's door cards with both windows jammed up and the switches disconnected. It's like being in a WW2 Lancaster Bomber.

Shame of it, is that this all started many many years ago when both the front windows were smashed for no reason and the Autoglass people bodged the repair. Eventually they paid a few hundred to have a garage repair what they had done but they have never been right since.

I have now given up and car goes in for a due service on Monday where I'll be arse raped for getting them to sort the windows.

Almost felt like dumping it and going out and leasing something new.

Not uncommon, I had my right one nicked. Have also had two door rubbing strips stolen in the past.

Does BMW send out a code to all cars approaching 100,000 miles to start falling apart biggrin No sooner have I collected the car from the Independent Garage, all working and clean and shiny then the gear stick falls apart.

The plastic inner that connects to the metal shaft has crumbled to bits. I blame you lot for telling me, years ago, that you just had to pull hard to get it off, the knob that is biggrin but mine wouldn't budge.

Finally managed it a few days ago in order to fit a new gaiter and now the knob just sits there coming off during aggressive gear changes and spinning around. New leather ones appear to be £70 upwards so a cheap imitation from Bulgaria is on order. Leather look with an M logo, Nice!

Yes I can't stand people with normal Beemers who put M signage on them but it seems if you want cheap, you only get M.
