Best track to try next - I like oulton park
Discussion
Booked to go to Oulton Park end of feb. just looking at somewhere for march. Was planning oulton but maybe I should try somewhere else.
Been to Cadwell before and wasn't as big a fan as I am of oulton - Maybe I just had a bad day but I wasn't too keen on the section between the mountain corner and the start of the long straight following all the other tight corners - mainly due to limited run off and tightness of the corners - just didnt seem to flow well!
Anyway I'm based up north so northern tracks are preferred but I would like to try the likes of silverstone etc. any suggestions?

Knockhill? It may be short but I like it. Plus it runs in 2 directions - 'classic' clockwise but also anti-clockwise. If you haven't driven it before I'd go for a regular clockwise session first as I prefer it to anti-clockwise...but maybe it's just I'm more familiar with it.
Only 'problem' if you're travelling a distance is there's rarely full day sessions - typically 4 hours on a Saturday or Sunday, or 2 hours on spring/summer weekday evenings. You might strike lucky and get clockwise and anti-clockwise sessions on one trip, so effectively 2 tracks in one.
If you are looking for dates then best to visit the forum on TrackScotland co uk. The mods here have a habit of deleting anything to do with Knockhill track days from the Scotland section, and given the relatively limited geographic appeal they tend not to get listed on TrackDays here.
Oh, and there's no noise issues. Do NOT do a 'Hot Hatch' day thinking it's a regular track day; it isn't. They run in sessions and probably not what you're looking for. Plenty of other regular OPL track days though. There's a 4-hour one on March 1 I think.

I quite like Cadwell, despite initially hating it (as I couldn't get to grips with it). Although I still don't like the speed I have to scrub off at the hairpin with a barrier about 1m in front of you.
I'd try Donington or Anglesey next, and personally I'd stay away from Silverstone - I've given it about 5 chances to change my mind over the years and I still came away thinking I've wasted a load of money.

then possibly

Ok, you've been there and didn't like it - it is very narrow, bit scary at first (although not so bad after you've done a few 'ring laps), but it is transformed once you start to get to grips with it. It's a lot faster in some places than it looks.
After that, Donington is a bit shorter, but any track with a bend like Craner on it is worth visiting
As with any track, a bit of tuition works wonders.
Spa? just brilliant and completely worth making the trip
Flat circuits aren't quite the same somehow

Cadwell is a fave of mine, even if it's a long way for a southerner.
If you like Oulton you'll love Brands GP- not cheap but is cracking & Donny, Silverstone GP is different- fast flat but fun, Thruxton & Goodwood more of a challenge & less $ & a bit scare factor in something quick.
Spa as mentioned is epic, Dijon & Zandvoort are other euro ace tracks not far from blighty.

Nobody has mentioned Mallory Park. If they keep it going then we should support them. It looks like a nice circuit, and is close to Donington.
Personally my favourites are Cadwell and Setterton. Very different to each other. Snetterton has loads of challenging corners and a couple of good straights to egt up some speed and relax at the same time, while as someone else said, Cadwell is faster than it looks, particularly Coppice. That's the uphill left bend at the end of main straight. I commented to a Fiesta driver that I was taking it at 70 in 3rd, and he suggested trying 90 in 4th. So I grew a pair, the car stuck to the track and I ended up at the next few corners a whole lot faster than before. Its a track that really benefits from a good geo set-up. My car was much faster with my wife in the passenger seat, as her 50kgs balanced the car better.
