Evening all,

Me and a friend have purchased a £300 MR2 MK2 and are going to partake in a Rally to Rome totaling around 4500 miles.

We know the clutch is gone (will be replaced prior), and it needs a new battery, but I have confirmed the alternator charges a working battery.

I am just wanting to collate a list of kit which may be required for us to complete the journey and currently I have the following list:

  • Jump Leads
  • Petrol Can
  • Oil
  • Coolant
  • Tyre pump
Is there anything else that I should think about? The car will have all new tyres, new brake discs/ pads and a major service.

Thanks!

Why bother doing discs and pads? Highly unlike it really needs discs, it's a banger after all don't spend on it if not absolutely necessary.

Change the alternator belt and replace the distributor cap and rotor.

Depends but if the route involves any of those Edge of the cliff roads I think Brakes might very well get done. I have also seen the way some Italians drive as well so that would seal it for me.

They will be around £60 to ensure we have decent stopping power when traveling quickly in the swiss alps. I think its worth it.

MR2's can suffer ignition problems - the coils split open and water gets in - then you get misfiring. Worth finding a good second hand spare... If it's got an immobiliser/alarm and you don't need it for the insurance, remove it - one less complicated electronic thing to go pop!

ETA - if you can get it swapped cheaply, get the cambelt done or at least have a look to see what state its in.

Breathalyser for France? Or was that canned?

Full size spare?

This is a MK2 right? Make sure your radiator is protected with a grille or kiss goodbye to your coolant in fairly short order.

What I plan to take when I do a Euro tour in my MR2:

Gaffer tape
Tons of strong zip ties
Small lorry straps
Coolant
Small metric tool kit
Screwdriver set
Lithium grease
half round file
G clamp
litre of dot4 brake fluid
Selection of hose clamps

That should pretty much get you out of most sticky situations wherever you are.

Why do you need a petrol can & coolant, it's an adventure improvise.
Don't take too much stuff, but do take gaffer tape/WD40/Bulbs

Tools required to remove and free off/exercise a stuck caliper (common problem). Small metric sockets/spanners, G-clamp.

Take the obligatory WD40, gaffer tape and cable ties and that's about it.

France - Those cheap breathalyser things from Halfords
Bear in mind in the yellow bib countries some places insist you can reach them from INSIDE the vehicle.
Also, I think Germany mandates a set of spare bulbs.
Oh, and don't forget your headlight deflectors.
In some places at certain times of the year it's the law to have either winter tyres or snowchains.

Never heard of that being an issue, some chicken wire may be in order?

Hopefully we wont run out of petrol, but if we do, its there. Its an old car, some coolant piping may be aged and possibly leak?
