Hi folks. Desperately need your help. Have spent an entire evening wading through towing rules for trailers and now thoroughly bemused! Have just bought a 2000kg trailer which is going to carry a 1000kg (BIG) horse. Now here is the laugh. Boss only wants to spend around £1000 to tow them with. Any ideas what we can get as close as possible to this price and still be able to move!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy to consider anything, doesnt matter what we look like so if anyone knows of any vans or landies or whatever that is out there we'd love to know.

In LandieWorld, £1k is going to buy you either:

- a Discovery 1
- a VERY VERY ropey Series
- possibly a very troublesome P38
- a saveable Classic if you're very lucky (possible at this price but it won't be in great nick and you'll have to swoop on an unsuspecting seller)

Don't hold me to these but the approx towing weights (braked trailer, and subject to your licence) are:

D1 - 3.2T
Series - I believe these are all limited to 2T unless the brakes are coupled, so that's out for you
P38 - 3.5T I think
Classic - 2T to 3.5T depending on age & spec

D1 is probably your best LR best on your budget? or start looking at Japs, Jeeps, etc. I would have thought an older LWB Trooper might tow quite a lot and be cheap?

Good job it's a big horse! With a £1000 Land Rover I fear the horse may end up pulling it's own trailer on a regular basis! smile

With your budget constraints I'd look at other manufacturers -

You could get a Daihatsu Fourtrak for your budget. Over here (Belgium) they're tow-rated to 2800kg. I know in Holland they are rated to 3500kg, so maybe also they can do this in the UK.

We run a couple of these in an agricultural contracting business, and they spend most of their time towing. Very simple mechanically, and virtually indestructible mechanics.

(I've also got a LR Discovery which is a wonderful machine for towing, but I don't think I'd want to depend on a £1000 one!)

D1 can pull 3.5 tonnes.
They'll be a bit rough for £1,000, but there's plenty around. I'd happily take that for mine.

Many apologies for late reply gentlemen. Thank you all for your invaluable help. Following your advice we have decided that we wont get anything worth it for the money and are going to use that money to put our existing landrover back on the road. Its engine is fine and pulls fantastically so its just getting rid of the scenic view of the road under our feet as we drive!! Many thanks again.

Hello Fellow LR's

I'm still confused by this towing thingy ..... I have a Defender 110XS, its rated at 3500kg towing, I have 2 trailers both rated as 3.5t, and tow them both regularly, included when they are fully loaded.

But I have read somewhere that you should only tow at 70% (I think) of the total weight of the Defender..... confused

What is the point of rating a car at 3.5 tonnes and then saying you can't tow 3.5 tonnes ..... frown

Can anyone clarify ......?

Thanks

Yes, correct. The law is that you don't exceed the plated towing capacity of the tow car.

The 85% figure is purely a suggestion by the Caravan and Camping Club and the Caravan Club. It has no legal status.
See ROG's thread at the start of S,P&L for the legal position.
