Quite interesting that they're opting to allow a higher speed limit in the night vs. in the daytime. I don't think I've seen that done before.

Isnt air quality usually a problem with stationary or dawdling traffic not moving traffic.

If the managed motorway theyve been working on for the last umpty zillion years works it should keep traffic moving and improve air quality.
Surely they could use the managed system to reduce the limit if necessary without this

The concern will be emissions of NOx, which tend to increase at higher speed. NOx emissions are particularly a problem of diesel engined cars.

In general there really isn't a problem with that stretch of motorway with regards traffic so saying it will help in that regard is a blatant lie. Why do they say its a consultation when they are clearly just going to implement it no matter the outcome, I'd rather they say it without the bullst.

At least they weren't completely retarded and have stated times of 7am to 7pm to allow traffic at night to make progress.

It's only a consultation.

Clearly some trees are more important than getting from A to B safely and efficiently.

Even if the authorities are daft enough to implement it, will the police
bother to enforce it ?

, higher vehicle engine speeds = hotter combustion temperatures = more NOx produced by internal combustion engines (whether petrol or diesel, and while diesels are better than petrol engines for CO, small particulate matter and HC they are worse for larger [visible ] particulate matter and NOx than petrol engines).

The bodge of EGR Valves (which recycle exhaust gas therefore reducing combustion temperatures and production of NOx under certain conditions such as cruising at high speed) only works to an extent .

This won't be the last such proposed scheme - the M60's north west quadrant has relatively very high NOx concentrations (enough to exceed the recent guideline levels, anyway, IIRC). Interesting that the part of the M1 proposed for this scheme is largely in suburban or rural areas .

I doubt this particular situation (the proposed M1 scheme) would happen on autoroutes in France, for example, where the population is more spread out and the average population density countrywide is only around 25% that of the UK .
