Caterhams to be sold in the US

Caterham teams up with Superformance for official Seven sales in America

It's not often, if ever, that Simon Cowell deserves thanks from the motoring community. But today is that day as Caterham Cars will now officially be sold in the US with everyone's favourite music mogul partly to do with it.

Cowell has one, now all the US does
Cowell has one, now all the US does
When Cowell had a Seven CSR 260 delivered to his LA home in 2013 it caused a lot of excitement Stateside. Getting a Seven legal in America has always been a bit of a faff because of the strict federal homologation rules so they're even rarer than over here. Cowell's appearance in one 'increased American interest in the legendary British sports car', so now Caterham had teamed up with Superformance (the guys behind the Daytona coupe) to be officially sold in the US.

Though we're told 'a range' of Seven models will be offered, the more powerful versions have been most popular in America until now and are expected to be the best sellers. It would seem 'no replacement for displacement' even extends to tiny roadsters in the US...

Therefore, the new Seven 485 and 620R are the models Caterham will be pushing. The cars will be shipped across the Atlantic in part-built form, with Superformance selling the kits for customers to complete at home.

A bold move, I think they'll do well out of it in the long run, but I'm no expert on the market - how is this style of car from other firms usually recieved in the States??

acceleration like a hypercar, and faster than a veyron on the track, sometimes it's only a matter of garage space to have such a car that's a problem. Well they have plenty there

Did you mean 'better', with a hint of irony?

As an aside, I wonder how long it will be before some Californian sues the arse off Caterham when involved in an RTC, and claims that there is insufficient safety protection etc....

There are Caterhams in America already, unless they're for track use only.

^ this with whistles and bells on i am afraid. All you need is a muppet to run out of driving talent, end up in a vegetative state and Caterham could suffer a loss that would ruin them.

Shame really, but I wish them well none-the-less.

Wonder what they'll look like with huge rubber bumpers and increased ride height...

That's probably why they are been sent over in kit form, then it is the responsibility of whoever puts it together.

Good for Caterham. The enthusiasm of and the number of enthusiasts for European cars in the US is significant. They know their stuff too. Having said that they will likely expect them to have leather chaps and tassles. However the fun is to be had at the traffic lights and perhaps Up Mulholland, that burial ground for moronic US drivers and riders. No doubt Hennessy or Fooks will put a hemi in and ruin one.

If they are too successful then I am sure they will get a visit from the larger bumper, too noisy, more indicators, electic, not made in the US brigade.

I think there are allot of Americans out there who would and do appreciate a car like this, could be a massive market for Caterham. Good for them.
