Trying to figure out how best to mot the banger at the moment. It's a 15 years old Avensis with ticket until June. The car has never put a foot wrong in 6 months and 18000 miles. It is, however, just £700 of Derby's finest.

Wondering how you tackle MOT time for older cars?

1. Wait until 11 months and hope for a pass. If it does, more value for the bangernomics connoisseur.

2. Do it at 6 months. If it passes, win - if it sells budget accordingly, make a succession plan or sell quickly.

3. Variation on the above.

I'm enjoying all aspects of cheap motoring at the moment, particularly learning to service etc so looking for experiences etc.

Option 1 with an eye to the list of advisories. If it scrapes a pass with a stack of advisories, sell asap with "12 months MOT" (and no hope of another...)

I've never done bangernomics so I tend to wait until the around the earliest date to get it MOTd which allows me to retain the original date, this (I think) gives me a month to sort any issues out if required.

My MOT tester is usually quite friendly in this aspect. he won't "put it through" its MOT unless it passes. I can MOT the 745i in the middle of next month as it expires in the middle of March.

I usually do the whole book-it-in-on-the-first-day-at-which-it-can-be-tested thing but this year I totally forgot so mine is booked in for tomorrow, and the MOT expires on Thursday. Booked in with my local specialist who haven't done an MOT for me before, so I'm a little concerned about it failing. The only thing I can think of off-hand that it may fail on is a cracked rear number plate but that doesn't mean I'm not half expecting a nasty surprise. Seems every year I think it will all be fine it fails, and every year I'm convinced it will fail it's always fine.
