I went for a 70D in the same situation but wasn't so bothered about full-frame. Happy with mine and mainly use the 55-250 STM lens. Otherwise the (full-frame) 6D has come down to just over £1k. Ok, noticed you mention second-hand in which case you can save a bit for lens or go for the 5D!
I went from 550D to second hand £1000 5D II so I feel I am qualified to weigh in here.
I was thrilled with the upgrade but one thing you must consider is if you're photographing cars/bikes on tracks or wildlife or anything similar where you need a long focal distance, you need decent glass or the transition will be frustrating. I had a 70-200mm L which I used for a few track shoots at a small event on my crop body and it was fine, especially with the 1.4x teleconverter. On the 5D II however, it was a little too far out.
So I'd say go for it, it was definitely the correct move for me, but just be aware that if you don't have some lengthy L glass you might find it a difficult transition.
