Hi All,

Could someone with Grantura MK3 (1963) knowledge please give me a little advice with respect to the front screen, seats and the Dials.

I need to get the screen replaced on my car and I have been told 2 different stories. Is it taken from a MK1 Ford Consul or a Ford Zodiac MK1?

Secondly - Does anyone know which are the correct Dials for the inside of the car. I seem to have a mixture of Smith, Lucas and Jeager in mine currently? I have some spares that came with the car and want to fit the right ones before I have the interior re-trimmed (which is completely knackered)

Lastly, this car has MK2 seats currently and I would love to get hold of some MK3 seats before I re-trim it. Are the seats bespoke or did they come from a donor car and if so which one?

A little background. I bought the car late last year and now have it running properly (Its a 3 Bearing 1963 MG based model). Once I get the screen replaced and a new exhaust fitted (the current one seems to be a scaffold pole that runs about an inch off the ground and hits the road almost constantly), i will be in a position to refit the interior, but don't want to do this until I'm sure of the Dials and can get hold of the right seats.

My intention is to drive it as much as I can so i need it to be practical but as original as I can make it. Im considering upgrading the brakes if Ic an as they are a bit scary...

Its great fun to drive, (once I squeeze myself into it), and really full of character.

Hope someone can help, many thanks

TJ

Welcome..the front screen as OE in a Ford of that era would be toughened ..IMHO you should be looking for a TVR screen, which will come laminated as listed, by almost any glass supplier.
I am sure any of the classic TVR dealers can help.
Adrian@
Pictures will help on the seat issue and dials I thought were AC at that point...(someone with better knowledge will be along shortly)

I've used a company called UroGlas in Bromsgrove for my Grantura. They supply heated windscreens for Granturas (and Vixens, M series etc) off the shelf.

I believe 1950's Zephyr, Consul and Zodiac are essentually the same car. I'd agree with Dave - Uroglass are excellent.

The dials are usually early MGB which if its a 63 car is Jaeger.

No idea on seats, sorry.

Seats if you look at the seats on the car on the other Grantura Thread i think they are correct i know they are for Mark 4 Granturas and Mark 1 Vixens and also SE V8 Tuscans the seats where Bespoke to TVR or at least that what i have been told others may know more.
These are hard to find but i know that there are some sets being made so you could put your name down i am sure he will e mail you and let you know wink
I was at some point going to put up a tread showing all the seats from the MK1 Granturas through to the Mark 4 Vixens as that would be a useful reference for others.
I am sure there are cross overs with spec from one to another as i am sure they had times where they needed to use up stock so early pictures of your car if you can find some are very useful reference points.
These seats i believe are the most comfortable off all the early TVR seats if assembled well and the straps/blader reinforced and maybe a cussion placed under the seat to help depending on the eating habbits of the driver hehe

Hello,

the name for the front screen is

Ford Zodiac 62-80 WS V KL runde Ecken 231043 3511ACL.

In Germany there is a company that produces these new (new!).

I had ordered one last year. Cost round about 220 Euros.

Gruß
Toni

It is worth mentioning (again) that fitting the heated version of the front screen is not straight forward for even the most experienced of fitters, as the design of the connection (which is an extension on the side of the glass) compromises the seal of the rubber extrusion, part of the shell needs to be cut away to allow for this and then IMHO an upgraded alternator sourced.

As featured in Peter Filby's recently published TVR - The Early Years.

This TVR is considered likely the most original and unrestored Grantura Mk3.

Originally ordered at the 1963 Racing car show with a special order 1798cc MGB engine, heater, windscreen washers and wire spoke wheels, all retained today including the original and matching number 3 bearing engine.
This exceptional example has at some time been repainted in the original Pippin Red.

Interior trim and most all else appears to be original.

Runs and drives but not used and dry stored for the last 3 - 4 years.

Peter Filby can't be a SPECIALIST on all of the marques, and especially models he has written about. I would trust the opinion being put your way. Further, while the information in books is often better researched than that found in magazines, it is not always the be all and end all. Also, "APPEARS TO BE ORIGINAL" is hardly an unequivocal statement.

Oh, and there's another thing. The only thing number stamped, on an MGB 1800, is the block, so the rest could have been swapped a hundred times, and nobody would know. The heads are notorious for cracking across the narrowest point between the valve seats. This was a problem long before no-lead fuels.

Remember, books are products brought to market for commerce.

Best,
B.

I think it is indeed Always very difficult to say what is original or not, those days many TVR's came in kit form or got their parts as they were available at the time, if some parts were not available they search for other parts/brands, or so I understood also from the books biggrin

most TVR's are ' special' and some a bit ' more' then others.

This seems to be an easy out for people. The cars were finished inside with minor things needed, ie lump connections etc.

Andrew,

It's neither. I'm hatching a dinosaur egg.

You're welcome to come over and watch me sit on the egg, while enjoying a bottle, or two of Imperial Stout, with me. Tea's fine too, but only Earl Grey or Chai.

There are enough exposed Aluminium bits, that by the time you polish it all, front to back, you'll be able to start at the front again. Bring someone who does uphholstry work.

I should have a small update in the coming week.

Best,
B.
