By this, I mean on the motorway when signs show say a 50mph limit for some reason. Many drivers seem to sit in either of the outside lanes at 50 even if you make it clear they should pull over. Now, I know you shouldn't exceed but what is it with these self appointed traffic cops that makes them sit there oblivious to all around them, even more so than when the normal speed limit is in operation and often with left hand lanes empty.

Because the rule is avoid changing lanes when the speed limit is lit up.

Not true at all. Unless signage says otherwise you should be keeping left.

Sometimes you'll see 'Congestion - Stay in Lane' so even when you don't, the sheep still do it.

You see messages on the SMS boards stating "Congestion - stay in lane" on the motorays a fair bit now.

Feeling the need to ask why anyone should obey the speed limit / law?
Sure most creep over 70 , but speed reductions are usually due to hazard/ workers in road etc

Apologies, I think I may be guilty of this. In a 50, an average speed camera is not going to bother with me if I set CC to 55 on the GPS speedo. This is a little faster than most in lanes 1 and 2 but only a little.

If I pull into lane 2, I'm quickly up the backside of the next car but if I stay out in 3, my speed is unimpaired.

I do get cars wanting to get past and when there is a space in lane 2 move into it but that can take a while.

Apologies to anyone I've held up but my assumption has been that you wouldn't want to go more than a bit above the limit.

When managed motorways first came out in significant numbers, the Department for Transport issues leaflets saying "avoid changing lane".
Can't find it now though, but as others have said, it often appears on the signs.

What a courteous fellow you are, unfortunately many others deliberately sit there. Now, I know you shouldn't speed but if people want to surely its for the cops to enforce not other road users.

a) Because they think they are entitled to do it.
b) Because they don't think it is an offence.
c) Because they are arrogant w&nkers.

Why do people do it at any time?
What makes people look in their mirrors, see a car wanting to drive faster, then make no attempt to move out of the way when there's no reason not to?
Human nature at its worst!

Because that's the lane which goes the way they want to go at that junction 23 miles ahead.

Perhaps the lane to the left is already full. Distances can get pretty tight in a congested 50 limit zone.

I prefer the term 'pass on the inside'. To me an undertake, just like an overtake involves changing lanes. If you've stayed in lane I don't reckon it's an undertake - it's just them going slower for whatever reason.
