Is this some sort of lifeboat ?

Spotted these in a marine salvage yard here in Singapore. There were about 6 in total.
Anyone know how it works ?
Says 'Jack Bates' on the side.

Yes looks like a lifeboat to me.
Jack Bates is a drilling rig, currently in the Indian Ocean if Google is to be believed.

On a rig these lifeboats are launched almost vertically nose first.

That's a twin fall lifeboat, as Steve said you can get free fall lifeboats but the one in the picture is lowered to the water by wires, one attached at the bow and one at the stern, hence the name "twin fall".

It's a TELB or Totally Enclosed Life Boat, it's not a freefall jobbie and (as previously stated) it'd have a couple of quick release hooks either end (probably out of sight in this pic) which can be set to release from inside once the weight comes off them.

Probably either in the yard for a refurb or they've been scrapped for some reason.

So if the lowering mechanism is knackered by some sort on incident on the deck (Piper Alpha comes to mind) it's the old leap of faith ?

Hat's off to these guys who work on rigs.
Even if you were airlifted to safety there's a fair chance you'd then be killed in the sunsequent helipcopter crash with their current safety record.

Could someone of please told me there was a fence infront of the boat as i've pushed refresh 3 times trying to get the whole picture to load
