A friend of mine bought a tin of Surströmming for Christmas. Anyone tried it? Think I need to get a few mates with inquisitive tastes round one weekend and open it at the far end of the garden, preferably underwater. Or better yet the end of someone elses garden.

I have a can in the fridge courtesy of a very kind PHer.
"kind" as in vindictive b
d??Do not open the can, I know of what I speak. (there are no smilies strong enough to use here)

However I'm sure it can't be worse than the rotten salmon I use to bait my crayfish traps with.

However, recruiting willing victims to try it with me is proving to be difficult.
I was about to offer as I want to experience different things in 2014 but...

Keep your stinky fish!

Hmmm, looks quite appetising on the picture in Chris_'s post, raw onion and pickled gherkin are both fairly strong flavours so make sense.
MC, I'm only about 40 miles away from you so if one of use opens a can the other will probably smell it
Do not underestimate the smell!!MC, I'm only about 40 miles away from you so if one of use opens a can the other will probably smell it

When I saw the cans being opened (outdoors) with the same mixture of care, fear and protective clothing that you would expect from a bomb disposal expert facing an IED, I thought it was a little exaggerated. I was wrong. Get this on your hands or clothes at your peril.
Other than that, it's fine!
Had a load of mates round for a BBQ yesterday so finished off the evening with the fish course.
No where near as bad a smell as I was expecting, and tasted a lot better than I expected too. I'd certainly describe the taste as 'robust' and can see why some people like it, it was the look and texture that put me off more than the smell or taste.

I've still got my can.
Unfortunately, most of my friends are fairly conservative about food, and the one person who'll quite happily eat b
ks, eyeballs, etc, is allergic to fish.
I'm sure the YouTube videos of people hurling and puking must be a tad overblown. I've eaten some very smelly Asian fish concoctions and I'm sure it can't be any worse than those.
