Hi, just bought my first TVR, I have been agonizing about it for months, but finally the hormones (midlife) have made it irresistible.bounce

Today it had its MOT, passed with no advisories, so I took it for a short drive after driving and noticed the heater was very warm, even with the blower off and the top wheel all the way to the left. It was a tad cooler than all the way to the right, but I would not call it "off".

Does it take a while to cool down? Could be that.

I also have high oil pressure (75psi on startup, falling to 55 to 60 when warm idle, increasing 10-15 psi if revved.) No tappety noise, so there must be decent oil flow. I did change the oil filter just in case that was causing it. I understand I should be seeing 30-50 PSI less than these numbers. I don't think its anything to worry about, but if anyone has contra advice then please post.

Its having a proper service next week at Techniques TVR http://www.techniquestvr.co.uk/ in Stotfold Bedfordshire next week, so I'll ask them to put a meter on the oil system to check if its reading right, its probably the sender or gauge as there are no other symptoms. Anyone used this specialist before, they were in Radlett until 2000?

Check that the dial on the dash is operating the valve.

The valve is in the passenger footwell left side , if you move the dial the cable should open/shut the valve. Possibly the cable is loose. If the valve is opening and closing but not working you can get replacements from ebay, its a VW part and quite cheap.

Dodsy , where exactly in the footwall is that valve and what does it look like? Is it easy to replace? I think I have the same problem as the op.

its easy to see, get in the footwell its on the left (if you are facing forward) , just follow the water pipes that are above the battery you will find it very easily. I think it might be behind some carpet but that just pulls away of it is.

Its a black plastic valve with 2 water pipes and an arm on the side which the cable attaches to.

Its very easy to find.

Replacing it - well I tried with mine but couldnt get the pipes off so ended up getting the garage to do it. They used hte part I supplied and only charged a few quid as it took them 10 minutes.

My problem was the opposite , never any real heat...but that turned out to be the engine thermostat , the valve didnt need replacing after all!

ETA: chance are you wont need to replace it, the cable has probably come loose and isnt operating the valve properly.

Hi
If the heater valve needs changing then try this link @ £5.95 remember to keep the cable clip off the old one.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HEATER-VALVE-NEW-FOR-VW-...

You don't need to drain the cooling system when changing as very little escapes, just put an old towel etc on the floor to collect any drips

The oil pressure could be as a result of someone changing the sensor to one that works better. There have been threads on this in the past. It's one for your TVR place - be sure to mention it to them.

As for the hot air, there are louvre vents which can be closed, the passenger side is near the map pouch and the driver side is on the transmission tunnel by your left knee. Closing these is the best way of keeping hot air out.
